Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

I'm now having to reconsider my trip to Belfast next week, mainly because I'm flying out to Dublin, then catching the X2 bus from Dublin Airport to Belfast at 18.50. Buses after 17.00 are currently being cancelled because of Monday's knife attack and the subsequent unrest. It MAY all have calmed...

Didcot-Swindon "getting full" - possible capacity improvements?

Did Network Rail warn the ORR about future congestion before access rights were given to Lumo (and what level of service has been approved)?

    Senior Bus Passes

Five years here in Devon and no renewal procedure - the new pass just arrived in the post. The DCC website states "Older person’s passes are issued for a period of 5 years and are renewed automatically as long as we can see that they have been used in the 12 months preceding the month of expiry...

Government announces "New mass transit taskforce"

France and Spain have both outstripped the UK in building new light rail networks since the 1980s, all three countries having started from a similar point by closing most of their first generation tramways after WW2. What lessons can be learnt from them, apart from planning transport provision...

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

Thanks for replies. For an occasional visitor, the lack of an OS-based map makes it difficult to relate bus routes to roads. I found a pdf map on-line but the format is similar to a London Underground diagram. I had the same problem in Dublin last year.

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

I've ordered a three-day Belfast Visitor Pass (£17) for my trip next month and it will come by post so I arrive already "ticketed". So far so good, but I can't find anywhere on-line a map of the Visitor Pass zone. It's clear for trains as the boundary stations are listed as Cultra, Jordanstown...

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

I thought they were built in Ballymena. I know they have a factory also in Malaysia.

    Liverpool City Region-Bus Franchising

I doubt whether your average bus user can tell the difference between a Volvo and an ADL. It's surely sensible to have distinctive liveries for networks which overlap and which accept different tickets - even if the overlap only occurs in a small number of places.

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

Yes, but 464 is operated from a depot in Lancashire and it's one of more than 30 routes operating from depots outside Greater Manchester which are not part of the Bee Network, although Bee Network conditions apply within the GM boundary. Conversely, 12 Bee Network routes operate across the...

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

I'll reserve judgement on the livery until I've seen it. Will the buses on the 590/591 through the Calder Valley be in the Weaver livery or, because they are cross-boundary, the operator's livery? If the latter, then passengers won't see "one system rather than a messy collection of operators"...

    Why I avoid e-tickets

I can't see how contactless "touch in and out" is feasible for anything other than local journeys because of the wide range of fares and ticket types available for long-distance travel. GWR has it in Cornwall (including Plymouth) and the Bristol area and we await developments in Devon.

Level crossings that would bring the greatest benefits if closed

When I lived in the area, Smithy Bridge level crossing was said to cause long delays to road traffic as a result of barrier malfunction, an event which evidently happened again last month. With the road on a gradient and a canal bridge right next to the railway crossing, there's no bridge or...

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

I acknowledge that there were non-geographical names among the NBC companies - Crosville, Red & White, United and United Counties - but I still prefer to see geographically-based fleet names because then there's no confusion about where they are. Perhaps I'm just old-fashioned!

What could be done to increase rail usage outside of London?

And bus operators are dependent on the developer adopting the roads they wish to use, or at the very least making them up to adoptable standard, with no raised ironwork. Often, developers do not complete the top surface of roads until the development is complete, so that construction traffic...

Failures in hot weather. What needs to change?

Surely a non-tech solution is better, e.g. fitting all new rolling stock with some opening windows (I mean the hopper type as used on 158s). This would be the simplest way of dealing with air con failure (and retro-fitting existing stock when the opportunity arises).

Peaks and Dales line - feasibility study submitted

From a quick look at RTT, most of the freight traffic originating on or near the Hope Valley seems to be heading towards Sheffield or Manchester rather than Derby. Is that everyone's impression?

How to avoid the airport public transport tax surcharges.

Bournemouth Airport appears to have hardly any public transport - only a handful of buses per day, early morning and late afternoon. A colleague of mine flew from there recently and had to get a taxi from Christchurch, having got there by train from Exeter via Salisbury and Southampton.
