Free Bus Travel for young people: Soon to be in England.

Restricting the free travel period to end at, say, 18.00 hrs would remove most of the ASB, if this becomes a serious issue. But the level of reimbursement, on top of the £2/£3 fare cap, must be the no. 1 concern to operators.

Hampshire & Solent Mayor. Transport priorities?

Any chance of reviving the Fareham, Gosport and Portsmouth tramway via tunnel under the harbour? Cancelled by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling 20 years ago, I seem to remember.

Why do so many local authorities want to introduce bus franchising instead of municipal operators.

Blackpool is already a Unitary Authority. Is it due to extend its boundaries - I'm a bit out of touch!

    Winding back the railway clock

Western was four-a-side and no armrests.

Is it the end of Picc - Vic bus in Manchester

That's the case until this month but Item 1379 in the latest Branch Line News caught my eye - "Notices at Bromley Cross station on 16th & 18th Jun seemed to advise that, from 5 Jul, train tickets from Greater Manchester into and across Greater Manchester will no longer permit free tram travel in...

    Winding back the railway clock

In 1964 or 65 I had to get from Bristol to York and back in a day for a University interview. At that time, the furthest I could get with a Day Return was Birmingham so, departing on the 7.40 from Temple Meads, I rebooked at New Street, at Derby and again at Sheffield. I suppose it didn't occur...

Bus stops on country roads that have no visible markings that they exist

On my (only) visit to Guernsey last year and travelling around by bus, I saw a number of stops like this, with BUS painted on the carriageway or footway and often hard to spot. In rural areas there was often no footway and once I had the choice of standing in the road or in someone's front...

What would a dream future cross-country train be like?

No-one has mentioned adding 3 rail capability for Basingstoke - Bournemouth, or is that just one complexity too many (especially if a separate sub-fleet is required)?

Next priority project - re-doubling of SW mainline.

Surely the local trains would run through to/from Barnstaple or Okehampton?

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

The solution may be to break the 590/1/2 to run Halifax - Todmorden so it can be part of the franchised operation, maybe extended to Walsden, where there in a turning circle, but there would still need to be a Rochdale service run by somebody.

The Naming of the 'Big Four' - who decided and how? Controversial?

Don't forget the LNER also served the north-east corner of Wales! Although three of the four new companies served Wales, there was no recognition of that in their titles, except the GWR indirectly.

Stagecoach South West - Fleet News & Discussion

Thanks. News reports say 30 electric buses for Exeter, so are the other ten double deckers? I'll have to pop over to Matford to see what's there.

Stagecoach South West - Fleet News & Discussion

According to the fleet list on BusTimes.org (which may not be 100% accurate) there are 11 Volvo BZLs now operating from Exeter's Matford depot - 66103/5-10/3-5/8. Not all are out every day but routes operated so far are A, B, I, J, 4 and 4A. Two others (66117/9) have been used in Torquay. On...

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

You're probably right. I didn't travel on many trains this time and ticket checks were carried out on most of them.

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

I'm back from Belfast now, having used my three-day Belfast Visitor Pass on buses and trains. All the travel arrangements went well. When you “touch in“ the Visitor Pass on the bus, you get a green light and beep indicating a successful read, and the machine prints a ticket which you must keep...

South Wales 'Metro' potential works, expansions and impact of possible road schemes on the railway

When I worked in Newport (in 1969!) I remember hearing comments that there were too many junctions on the M4 and that too much local traffic was using it. I hadn't realised there had been a plan to close any.

    West Northamptonshire Rail Action Plan

I remember that, at one time, it was planned to reroute Midland Main Line trains from Market Harborough to run via Northampton to Euston, and some bridges were raised to permit OHLE. Wasn't this part of the plan to close St. Pancras? This has all been overtaken by events and, in the meantime...

£2.5bn Leeds Tram plan delayed after government review

France is well ahead of the UK in building light rail systems, some of which are in relatively small cities such as Besançon, pop.120,000. It would be good know what factors make light rail affordable in France but not in the UK. Other than political will (or lack of it), devolved funding...

Nothing at Yeovil Junction when I was last there so this must be a new venture.

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

Without wanting to digress from the OP's post, my main issue is that I will be flying to Dublin then catching the X2 express bus from Dublin Airport to Belfast at 18.50 (as there are no direct flights mid-week from Exeter) and, for the past two nights, this has not run as Translink has pulled...
