    What efficiencies could GBR bring?

If GBR means fewer CEOs or MDs, with salary savings, will there be a GBR chairperson equivalent to the old BR chairmen, some of whom were well-known public figures, particularly Sir Peter Parker, who was often seen on TV. He was a champion of the railway, with no equivalent since 1997. While...

Fleetwood to Knott End ferry to end

I never used this while living in the north-west, despite several trips to Fleetwood by tram. In the south west we have quite a few such ferries. I'm not aware that any are threatened with closure but believe that elsewhere in Europe ferries like that at Fleetwood would be treated as part of the...

    Hall Class 7904 Fountains Hall

There was a debate about Avondale Castle (7010). Part 14 of the RCTS Locomotives of the GWR states on page P107 - "Swindon records this as in the county of Monmouth but no such site or building has been found. It was obviously name inadvertently after a ruined Castle near Strathaven...

    Holborn escalator speed

Sounds like an escalation :D of the "please hold the handrail" announcement which pervades major GWR stations.

Last use of non-bogie passenger carrying stock on scheduled services

I think the BPGVR examples, used to carry miners and lacking upholstery, could have been the very last 4-wheelers in service, although not shown in a public timetable.

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

I see that TLC still run the local routes in my former home area, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. Are these going to be packaged with other services or let as a small franchise?

Using multiple tickets for one journey should be banned, with passengers forced to exit the train at the split point

I've just booked my first split tickets for a journey between Polsloe Bridge and York in November and achieved a good saving over two advance singles. A contrast to my 1964 experience of split ticketing on a journey from Bristol to York and back (in a day) for a University interview. A day...

Bus services that require reversing (except in bus stations)

Some more in Devon 355 at Thorverton 373 at Sampford Peverell and/or Uffculme 1788603234 I forgot service T (Exeter - Woodbury) at Topsham Quay.

    Liverpool City Region-Bus Franchising

Thanks. I didn't know that. So effectively it's just a Merseyside scheme. The timetable suggests 82A is run from the Runcorn end so it will remain commercial, but 82 will be franchised. I hope the ticketing can be sorted out.

    Liverpool City Region-Bus Franchising

Apols if I've missed something, but why would Halton, which is part of the LCR, stay outside the franchising scheme? Related to that, why replace the well-known Merseytravel brand with the meaningless "Metro"? I have relatives on the 82/82A route at Cressington who might be bending my ear as...

Longest distance a road uses an abandoned railway alignment?

The A385 between Newbiggin and Tebay runs for 7.5 miles along the trackbed of the former South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway, aka the Stainmore Line.

    Evening Day Return GWR

I came to the same conclusion. It seems an odd way of offering this ticket. Effectively it's only of any use to me for a trip to Exmouth or Torquay/Paignton. Or I could buy an additional POL - EXC return ticket, which would negate any saving on the BNP fare - or go into town and back by bus...

    Evening Day Return GWR

To add to my post above, I found this on the national Rail website. "Only valid in the evenings. Travel must be on trains arriving 1800 or later, at customer's destination or first changeover station. All outward and return travel must be completed on the same evening." Time restriction L3 applies.

    Evening Day Return GWR

Yesterday I decided on an evening trip from local station, Polsloe Bridge, to Barnstaple, due to arrive there 18.33. I used the 16.46 from POL and bought my ticket at the EXC ticket office as there was a 20 minute wait for the 17.15 to BNP. I asked for an "evening return" from POL and was issued...

Free Bus Travel for young people: Soon to be in England.

But it doesn't work like that. Operators expect to be reimbursed for "revenue foregone", as they are for ENCTS passes.

Free Bus Travel for young people: Soon to be in England.

The tax or Council Tax payer as operators expect to be reimbursed. Are the reimbursement arrangements the same as for ENCTS passes, i.e. "no better, no worse off"?

    Britain's Most Scenic Bus routes

Yes, it was the 22 from Dawlish Warren to South Devon College via Torquay and Paignton. 22 now starts from St. Marychurch and follows the same route to S Devon College, so that from St. Marychurch to Torquay you now have both the 11 and the 22.
