Why is there a gate and stairs at North Shields Station that's never open/used?

I've often wondered why there is a gate on the south side of North Shields station and a ramp and stairs. These are never open. Were these built when there was a line from NS to St James and a third platform was being used ?

    Avanti West Coast performance statistics

I am thinking about travelling to Glasgow from Newcastle, via Carlisle for a change of scenery to the normal LNER ECML route If the Avanti service is so bad, maybe I should use it for my homeward leg, ie from Glasgow to Carlisle, then assume the Northern rail service to Newcastle is on time...

I am puzzled as to how advance fares work .. Northern Rail

Many many thanks 'Yorkie' I've actually just had a quick look on the forum's site and it looks good .. Those £3 single tickets were shown too. Yes, I would prefer to get a 'whole journey' booked as one. That option to include certain stations is brilliant I'll search again nearer the time ...

I am puzzled as to how advance fares work .. Northern Rail

No, it's actually from the ScotRail site (I wouldn't use Trainline) I'll be going to Glasgow at the end of May and tickets are not yet available, but I was just looking at options. Travelling from Newcastle to Carlisle, then up north could be a nice trip. I hadn't even realised ScotRail...

I am puzzled as to how advance fares work .. Northern Rail

Am I doing something wrong ? I could book a day trip to Carlise for a Monday in March for £6, but for a similar Monday in April it is showing as £37.20 * I would have thought the further you book, the cheaper it is * Yes, there's an off-peak return at £18.70, but the single proices are...

    LNER Perks

I have some money in the LNER perks scheme and not I can use it to reduce the cost of a future ticket, but it looks as if this only applies to tickets bought through the app. I find it much easier using the PC, rather than a small phone screen, but I'll give it a go .. as soon as the tickets I...

    Fares for Newcastle to Glasgow

I wanted to book a return journey from Newcast to Glasgow for the end of May but tickets are not available yet, via the LNER website. I have set up a ticket alert However, I was wondering whether I should be maybe checking individual websites, ie LNER and Scotrail, rather than the 'combined...

    Special Offers Discussion

Northern Rail sale ... I've just booked 3 day-trips in February / March from Newcastle to Hexham, Prudhoe and Hartlepool and paid a total of £9 .. so that's pretty decent I think. Funny though, how some short journeys are far more expensive than longer ones, even using the exact same train...

Yes ... good point well made :D

Sleeper train on the ECML ?

Yes, you are probably right, but there is always Manors Station, a totally open, unmanned station, about 1 mile from the main Newcastle Station, so anybody wanting to view the sleeper could go there ... it's just not on my 'to-do' list in the middle of the night BTW .. My picture was taken at...

Same train, but only half way distant .. more than double the price

My wife and I recently got a Two Together railcard, so have already had a trip to London resulting in a saving more than the card actually cost (£20 on offer) and we've also booked another trip to Edinburgh. Now just playing, I find a return ticket to Carlise from Newcastle In January for...
