    The Transport Game (UK)

We decide to head back to rural North Yorkshire, but this time an area to the west of the moors. We board the 1030 Arriva North East service 28A to Stokesley High Street, arriving at 1126 on Wednesday morning.

Trivia: Stations at which services go to the same destination from different platforms

It isn't strictly a heavy rail line, so is only a hypothetical example, but would you accept the stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro eastern loop? Using Whitley Bay as an example, trains from Platform 1 go to South Shields via Monument, whilst trains from Platform 2 go to St James, but also via...

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

Also because this coincides with the return of schools and universities - if that's found to be yet another event which should cause a second wave but doesn't, then that will further shift media opinion.

    Impact on Universities

Truth be told, it's an impossible situation. I don't think getting rid of all restrictions which forces the vulnerable into effectively a prison is a good idea. But equally, restrictions shouldn't be so tight that those who are less vulnerable live an utterly miserable life. Because I'm very...

    Impact on Universities

As someone who's suffered heavily with mental health issues during my time at university, I have a pretty good knowledge of what depressing actually means. And being cooped up, socially isolated, not feeling like you have anywhere to turn for support, and fearful for your future? That's almost...

    The Transport Game (UK)

We wait at the Market Place for the 11:05 Stagecoach in Chesterfield service 65 to Meadowhall Interchange (A4), arriving at 13:01 on Tuesday afternoon.

How much longer will social distancing go on for in the UK?

In fairness, that point is pretty similar, especially if we're not going to be allowed to have a social life for the next year!

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

I suspect "Not having universities return 'could spark mental health avalanche'" would never be an article they'd consider publishing, but it's a more likely outcome...

Unlikely we will see a return to full XC timetable?

As a regular user of their NE - SE service, I hope that the change isn't permanent - I find the ability to use one through train from Newcastle right through to Oxford very handy indeed. I'm not usually opposed to changing train, but when I have a lot of luggage it's less appealing, especially...

How much longer will social distancing go on for in the UK?

As mentioned, my worry is not when a vaccine will be ready by - it's when it can be distributed by. I had read that production of the Oxford vaccine could begin before all trials were completed, with the products disposed of should the vaccine fail. I would hope that this is still being done...

    The BLM protests in June

Absolutely - just that the most important point is not whether these events caused cases to spike, but whether they caused significant numbers of serious illnesses or deaths. If there was a spike in cases, that should only worry us if it actually results in more serious outcomes.

    The BLM protests in June

Well we know there hasn't been a spike of deaths because of them. For all we know either could have caused a lot of asymptomatic (or mild) cases, which might have gone undetected.

How much longer will social distancing go on for in the UK?

But that could be years away, especially when you remember that finding the vaccine is only half the battle (distribution could well take longer than trials). Expecting everyone to give up what may well prove a significant chunk of their life for a virus with a pretty low fatality rate seems a...

the most over the top restrictions introduced

If I'd been in that position I'd have walked out and simply taken my business elsewhere.

    UK face coverings discussion

I wonder how many parents of 5 and 6 year olds will insist their kids are four... And agree re schools, there's something genuinely chilling about kids not being able to smile at their mates in the corridor, and having to see masked crowds at school - especially for those entering S1. There...

    UK face coverings discussion

That's my problem as well - I find them absolutely dehumanising. When I see people wearing them outside, or in other contexts where they do next to nothing, it just makes me sad at this point. The very worst one is seeing children wear them, that genuinely makes me want to cry. I don't find...

    Impact on Universities

Yes, but a balance has to be struck. You do know that (for example) the percentage of young people suffering moderate or severe symptoms of depression has risen to 31% - social isolation has had a huge impact on mental health. I know so many people who have really struggled, and having harsher...

    Arriva's revamped website

Fare information is somehow even worse than the old site - now you can't even find out the price of many period tickets, to say nothing of singles and returns. As you point out, hopefully they will adjust it when they realise it isn't very good - but it's miles behind the Stagecoach site, for...

    Arriva's revamped website

I noticed that as well - the X93/X94 are slightly better, but there are still bizarre straight lines between Scarborough, Whitby, Guisborough, and Middlesbrough. Very odd, and not present on their maps before the change.

    UK face coverings discussion

Which seems to be partly thanks to masks - worryingly many people believe they're invincible because of a bit of cloth over their face...
