using a contactless debit card on TfL

Danger with using a phone: if your battery runs out and you are unable to prove you have a valid ticket (either at the destination station's gateline or when challenged by a ticket inspector), you may be charged a penalty fare.

    Interchange only station?

Ah yes, the Berlin ones. Didn't think of that despite being there for some months recently! Old Oak Common is surprising. I guess the route of the lines came first, the thoughts of regeneration of the area came second!

    Interchange only station?

Mentioned in the article (and me answering my own question) - Smallbrook Junction on the Isle of Wight

    Interchange only station?

Probably one for underground metros, but I wondered if there were any 'interchange only' stations around the world, i.e. a station where two lines cross, and you can change, but has no entrances or exits to the outside world (apart from the inevitable fire escapes). Does such a thing exist...

What's the point in ticket barriers at stations?

For the major London stations, and other cities, many stations have the same gateline for local and regional/intercity services. The local services are often DOO, are too heavily loaded for a ticket inspector to move through, and journeys would be too short for comprehensive checks on board...

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

In Crayonista world: (1) Divert the existing line after Gallions Reach north along whatever alignment is required to Barking. These trains no-longer serve Beckton. (2) Take a new branch at Prince Regent along the old Beckton Gas Works route. Put it on a viaduct to avoid cutting the park in...

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

Also with the DLR, the further you get out of the centre the less attractive it becomes to use all the way in to the centre, as it's comparatively slow compared to the tube and certainly the Elizabeth Line. Beckton to Tower Gateway is already 30 minutes. Thamesmead to Tower Gateway will be 45...

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

Beckton attracted 2.569 million passengers last year which is around 54 full double deckers per day. That may not sound like much but consider a high percentage of that number will be between 07:30 and 09:00.

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

It still exists as the Beckton Corridor nature walk, and is straight as a die all the way to Beckton. Just a few roads cross it. Seems like it could easily be brought back as a railway line, but I suspect there'd be a lot of local opposition to doing so -- it'd pass behind quite a few people's...

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

Interestingly, that is possible without getting in the way of other services. Stratford International isn't a bad destination either though, you already get Crossrail at Customs House, but Canning Town gets you the Jubilee and West Ham gets you the District Line. Customers wanting Canary Wharf...

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

Sure, there's no need to close Beckton from an infrastructure point of view - but it's a pretty wasteful to send half your train service there when you have a lot of customers in Thamesmead now needing them. I figure DLR made something of a mistake with Beckton, at least one in hindsight. I...

DLR and Overground Extensions to Thamesmead

Something consider with DLR extensions is that there's very little free capacity in to the centre of London -- Bank + Tower are already hitting 30tph in the peaks between Shadwell and Westferry. Perhaps 32tph or 36tph is possible? I don't know. If there's a Thamesmead DLR extension, how many...

A very short question about Class 373 (e300)

I'm not that personally bothered by the answer to this, as it may just not be a scenario they ever designed the things to deal with, either on a software or mechanical level. But if anyone wants to throw in an answer, obviously they are free to do so! I have seen a photo of two power cars...

A very short question about Class 373 (e300)

Simultaneous invention is a common thing in human history though. Just look at Liebnitz and Newton both inventing calculus.

A very short question about Class 373 (e300)

Nice, I see that one has an identical bogie configuration to the 373 as well.

A very short question about Class 373 (e300)

I just realised they are the only coaches that have a separate bogie, so they have to be in the formation because the power cars don't share bogies with the front coach.
