The Crystal Palace services run up through Honor Oak Park and Brockley on their way to the core, which both already have problems in the peaks with people not being able to board crush loaded trains. It's often the case that West Croydons are already heaving by Forest Hill, and the Crystal...
You're right, I don't think those escalators do serve much of a purpose, they're just a leftover. Given they're there though, may as well keep them. It would seem odd to wall off that area or rip them out and convert to a staircase given the emphasis on step free access nowadays.
What used to be that concourse still exists, but it's not as useful as it used to be.
It still links the bus station to the bridge over Tooley Street to the Cottons Building, and still has the escalators that go down to Joiner Street (where the tube entrances are) but the gatelines at either...
Right, so there's the plan. It's likely to be a 30 minute service on the GOBLIN until the 710s are sorted out. I bet they'll drop New Cross to 30 minute service as a result of needing the trains.
We assume there is one spare because one was supposed to be away at the refurbish/refresh programme that has now been pushed back. If they end up needing to transfer 2 or 3 trains to the GOBLIN then yes, there will likely be services cut elsewhere. There are no good places to cut so one can only...
If they do manage to get one of the 710s proved and accepted over the next couple of weeks, just in time before more of the diesels leave the capital, could we see a situation where there are 378s, 710s and a couple of remaining 172s all serving the route at once?
The slopes were reworked in to more compact stairwells when the platforms were rebuilt & lengthened, and they are now fire escapes. The staircases aren't high enough capacity for the number of passengers they'd likely attract, so the chances of them ever opening as additional exits in normal...
Wandsworth Road - adjacent through lines go to Victoria, whereas the platformed lines go to Clapham Junction. In the other direction many ex-Victoria trains take the Bromley South line, some go via Denmark Hill but not all stop and certainly none head to the ELL.
Thanks for that - I had been assuming that was just the paint job but from your photo it's clear it is detail. Am I right that the 345 in your photo seems to be lacking the skirt cowling around the front coupler? In other photos it usually seems present but looks like a slightly different shape...
Oh yeah. It looks like the white headlight is recessed on the 710 whereas it's flush on the 345. Is that right? Any idea why this is? (LED vs not LED?)
I hadn't really noticed before, but have these trains done away with the practice of having one bright headlight and the offside as just a...
I originally thought the frontend of the 710 was slightly different to the 345, but I see now it's just a paint job. The 345 seems like it has a 'lip' which I don't really like, but the swish on the Overground paint job totally de-emphasises this and makes it in to a rather good looking machine...
I wonder if the result will be as 'luxurious' as the current 332 interior, or will they ultimately end up looking more like the Gatwick Express trains (which are nice, but feel mostly like a standard 387 with some extra luggage racks).
Reports from AnonW's blog (anecdotal yes, but there's no particular reason to disbelieve the quote):

Perhaps Chinese whispers at work, but there we go.

How similar would the cab, safety and procedures be to the 345? I'm guessing it'd be tricky if not impossible to bend the rules to get some drivers hired for Crossrail on to the GOBLIN on a temporary secondment?
I have a feeling it's harder to do this than it sounds. If you turn a train at London Bridge you'll need to find a southbound path for it to fit in to, and every minute over 3 that it's stopped in the platform it's holding up other Northbound trains behind it. I agree that better plans are...
