    Bad traffic enforcement

That would seem very sensible. The bus driver could hit a button to upload the footage if s/he encounters something dodgy! You might not even need an incentive to the bus operator - they would benefit from clearer bus lanes and stops.

    Bad traffic enforcement

People aren't perfect. They tend to leave things to the last minute. They also don't see it as £20 a year, but £200. For many people that's a significant sum of money. Yes, many spend way more than that on optional extras for their car, but many more buy a simple second hand runaround, and their...

    Bad traffic enforcement

I'm talking about effectively the next generation of this, not just looking at jerky driving, but with a camera checking distance to the car in front, position on the road, compliance with signs, reaction to hazards, potentially also checking your attention on the road ahead etc. To be clear...

    Bad traffic enforcement

I'm quite surprised that noone has suggested technology as a solution to this. We're probably at the point now where every car could be fitted with a permanent AI 'examiner', that monitors your driving standard. I'd hope that it wouldn't be used to fine you for doing 31 in a 30 zone, but perhaps...

    Sanity-check for a very large-scale rail concept

Not particularly commenting on the physics, but the ratios seem a bit inefficient. Having a 300m long, 200m wide articulated section on 100m gauge track you are going to lose massive amounts of space at the ends of each carriage. I assume this is in order to have sufficient bogies to support...

What could an “ideal” Bristol service recast look like?

A few ideas that I don't think have come up yet... I'd like to see Portsmouth - Cardiff 'promoted' to an intercity service, with fewer stops, higher speeds and improved trains. This service connects some large population centres, has poor competing roads and is pretty crowded. This would...

    Calmac / Northlink Ferry discussion

Good to see another theferryforums.com member on here too! I managed to be the very first revenue passenger to step aboard, and really enjoyed the maiden voyage. As you say, it was pretty low key, but I think she's going to be an excellent ship for Calmac, though she does have a few...

    Calmac / Northlink Ferry discussion

It's an interesting question. With a large class of identical vessels, it could be practical to base crews on a route rather than attached to a specific ship. If the ship moves to a different route, then it picks up the crew from that route. I believe that's how the loch class work. It would...

    How Viable are Preserved Railways?

If done well, hedging can allow the business to concentrate on what it does well, rather than panicking about changing commodity prices. It can lock in prices at known rates, (for example at the point when prices are set) avoiding the gambling element that comes with buying at spot rates.

    How Viable are Preserved Railways?

Yes. The reason that prices rise is because supply is reduced (in this case by war). Higher prices reduce demand back down to match supply - for example putting people off driving in favour of more fuel efficienct transport. If there is an over supply then they will want to sell the excess, so...

    My City Bus Manager Save

Not an area I'm familiar with, but I don't like all of those 40 minute frequencies. I find a clock face pattern is much more memorable for planning journeys.

Avanti take needless announcements to a new level

I noticed a safety announcement that was actively dangerous yesterday. On a GWR 150, the standard station announcement was something like "This is Bodmin Parkway. Do not attempt to board or leave the train whilst the doors are closing. This is a service to Penzance. The next station is...

    Current large road building projects

Oh, most of it is from Weston and the huge new housing developments there, to places to the east. The railway in Weston could do a better job of dealing with the new north - south traffic. Ideally it needs a metro-style 4tph into Bristol, and Worle station becoming a full on Weston Parkway...

    Current large road building projects

The Banwell bypass is mainly to relieve the extremely overcrowded roads through Banwell village, where several busy routes meet in the middle of the village on a section of road that is just a bit too narrow for two cars to pass. It will transform the village centre from a polluted nightmare to...

New Go-op train service between Swindon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare approved by ORR - Access Rights now lapsed

Surely adding 2 carriage trains into the mix is likely to reduce overall capacity, as GWR will have fewer options to increase capacity with additional IETs?

New Go-op train service between Swindon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare approved by ORR - Access Rights now lapsed

I think you (and go-op) are putting a bit of an inaccurate spin on these numbers... The GWR service has far more capacity than in 1997. There are far more trains running, and with bigger capacities. There are now regular semi-fast London trains running through Westbury with 80x trains that...

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the secret sealed document and his arrest

As I understand it, the reason this hasn't already been done is that all of the countries that he's in the line of succession for would need to vote for this too, and there is a concern that some (e.g. Australia) might vote instead to abolish the monarchy instead.

When did Victoria replace London Bridge?

Plymouth was indeed a main arrival point for Royal Mail Steam Packet Lines from 1873, probably the biggest UK - South America line.

    Class 175s to GWR

Do these miraculous fitters who know the 175s inside out and can get them working instantly actually exist? Just because Alstom built them 25 years ago, I don't see any particular likelihood that they will still have experts on their staff. Alstom also hasn't operated Chester depot for 4 years...

How could more capacity be squeezed out of Birmingham New Street?

I'm not an expert, but I'd disagree. ~10 min dwell times on intercity services through New Street sounds about optimum from a passenger point of view as well as an operational one. Delays are always going to occur, and putting in extended dwell times is probably the best 'organic recovery'...
