I'd say that this is an argument against the kind of rural reopenings that only require a 2 carriage sprinter running an hourly service. Spending tens or hundreds of millions to remove 25 cars per hour off a rural road doesn't feel like good value - that sort of number of cars really isn't...
That’s an idea I haven't seen mentioned on here before, and it could actually be an interesting one.
I'd guess that the variable operating costs of the Seaton tramway are pretty low, so it wouldn't be ridiculous to run commuter timed and winter services. With it being a light, narrow gauge...
Could shouting about the combined reopenings in the UK be a bad news story? It could easily be seen as a 'since 2000 we've spent billions of pounds reopening half a dozen loss-making lines to places you've never heard of' story.
For my mind a much better good news story would be to compare the...
Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa should never have been built. A class of three smaller, simpler, cheaper ferries that could fit pretty much the whole network would allow an hourly service from Ardrossan to Brodick and give far more resilience.

Alfred and Caledonian Isles will cover Arran between them for the duration of the summer timetable. Alfred charter extended to cover this.

I think there is a market, especially chasing car drivers.
From London there are basically 3 motorways heading north (M40, M1, M6) carrying intercity type traffic. *
From Bristol there is 1. All 4 roads are similar size, and all get very busy. You could infer that the intercity market from...
This thread has shown that on journeys to/from the middle of the country (area between Birmingham and York) flying is rarely competitive.
On journeys between London and places north of around York, flying and rail are fairly well matched.
On cross country journeys (from the south and...
I think the headshunt at Bank DLR sees 36tph at off peak (18 arrivals, 18 departures), increasing to about 40tph in the peaks. I don't know if this beats the Victoria line for numbers of trains, though obviously it is much more gentle speed and weight wise than the Vic.
An example would be that TOC1 has the xx:30 service from Paddington to Bristol, with a requirement to serve Reading, Swindon, Chippenham and Bath with 125mph stock with a capacity of at least xxx seats per day.
Other than that, I would see Network Rail managing the negotiations of exact...
Oh I agree, not easy.
I was thinking something on the lines of operator 1 getting the xx:00 slot, and operator 2 getting the xx:30 slot on a particular service, and having a service level agreement to run them. Obviously DfT is still involved, but using competition to set standards rather than...
GBR looks like being an utter mess. I love the idea of public services being run for the public good, but having politicians and the civil service involved in running or buying anything always seems to end badly run, poorly specified, overly expensive, short term decision making.
I wonder if...
For me (as one of the people GusB was agreeing with) I think NSL works well. 60mph is about right for cars on larger single carriageways, and speed limits on winding rural roads make little sense as the safe speed is constantly changing, so a symbol rather than a number (which would be seen as a...
I was there in March and there was a two boat service running.
I understand that someone has decided that passengers and vehicles should not board together, so the 15 minute frequency has dropped to 20 minutes. It seems to be utterly ridiculous, especially on Loch Shira where there's already a...
You clearly don't live in a rural area. Reducing the speed limits in this way would make little difference to the average resident of Milton Keynes, but it would make areas like Devon and Cornwall significantly more remote. 70mph is entirely reasonable on a typical rural trunk road, and many...
Having that legal duty and it actually happening are two separate things. If the charity that owns it runs out of money then they will cease to exist and there will be no one to enforce that duty of keeping it in a good state of repair.
