With mobile phones, cab radios etc being faster than signals, I guess they want to cover all options to avoid liability? If comms are down and the approaching train has passed the last signal all you can do is lay dets. 2-3kms to do an emergency stop? Surely less than that?

Lord no, I agree completely. I hate the smell of smoke too. And yes quite right about staff not smelling of smoke. If I worked in a customer facing role I would certainly be very careful about that. And I will be giving up again if I get the new job I am going for now :D

I have only used the FCL at Kingsx when it was GNER and it was fine. I have been in the EC offices beside the new FCL and used the loo, but prefer a cig outside and a good old chat with the staff as they come and go. But I will investigate it and Waverley FCL when I get time :D

I know it seems like it but the tests do rate you even if you don't know what they are rating you for. A friend of mine is a pilot and some of the stuff they are tested on is a million miles away from the ability to fly an aircraft. But that is not the point. Doing the job and assessing...

Stood many a time at Leeds station and listened to all the funny noises 225's make as metal contracts and water cools etc. Really does sound like they are chilling out exhausted after their journey, unlike electric sets that seem so erm, quiet and dull.
