Once Huddersfield is wired and if Bradford Interchange gets it's consolation catenary, I assume we'll be waiting another century before Halifax and the Calder Valley is electrified. Halifax does start to look like a diesel island.
Given that HFX-HUD is quicker by rail but much less convenient...
Halifax has 2 platforms for about 90'000 people, so by the strictest definition not well served for platforms.
However, whilst I know that Northerners are fiercely independent but anyone that claims Sowerby Bridge isn't in South West Halifax is having an urban joke with themselves. Therefore...
I’ve been in Australia for 22 years and I’ve always loved the V sets. Been around for 50 years now and they’re on their way out. It does get me to thinking though - given these are 1500vDC and capable of belting up the blue mountains - how would they have fared over Woodhead?
Back in the 90s I remember one of the bridges over the then-closed Brighouse station had an L&Y metal sign. Think it was a do not trespass sign. Just looked on google earth and can’t find it - hope it went to a good home.
Weren’t they going to wire Leeds to Bradford Interchange as part of the NPR cancellation bribe? Just crack on and wire Bradford - Halifax - Brighouse - onwards to Wakefield K, Pontefract and the ECML. Chuck in the Bradley Curve as well.………… I’ll get my coat
Sydney trains have made huge efforts to “untangle the network” in recent years and on the whole, issues such as a track failure or medical incident in one place on the network no longer have catastrophic impact on the other side of the city. It does seem however that when there is a network-wide...
Only Manchester Road has a hint of main line about it and I hazard that the combined passenger numbers for all 4 may not come close to the figures for Halifax/Rochdale/Blackburn (insert comparable Northern town here). I think in Burnley’s case there are two lines and strung out urban development.
Enjoy the Maitland trip - it's a great run and if you can spend some time at that historic station you can watch the coal trains go through on 24/7 cycle. As mentioned on here you can get off the XPT earlier - you just can't book it.
Explorer to Canberra is also a good run - let us know how...
The lost mainline platforms at Carnforth get more than an occasional mention on here. But it has me wondering.
What was the level of service to those platforms prior to closure? Even in THAT film, expresses mostly rushed through. Was it the case that it was a convenient place for an engine...
Class 58 - looks like a school group project gone wrong. Also not a fan of the cab end of a class 20, although the front end makes me smile so I give it a pass.
