Excess Tickets

Could you give me a bit of advice on an Excess? I bought in advance a Farnborough Main - Peckham offpeak return (not day return, with Gold Card discount). Change of plan meant I had to travel out in the peak. Took to ticket office, first response was go away and talk to where you bought it...
