Track is hard work. You do a lot more work that any other class. You also get assessed on more subjects. If you enjoy mechanical work, understanding how things work then Track is good. If you are more into classroom based subjects such as electronics then the others are good. Im a Track...
Im actually doing a presentation on this as we speak.
They are called Datum Plates and they are used to ensure all movement of the track is measured and can be re-adjusted to design level if need be. They are used to "manage the relative movement between the track and lineside structures" and...
No, its called the Watford Training Centre? I can't remember what it was when I did mine in Watford. I might ask them if I can go to Westwood. Would be good to go there :D
From the infrastructure maintenance side of things, we have to moniter the track condition for a set period of time after the new rolling stock is introduced. I can't remember for how long off the top of my head. Looking for things such as railhead/side wear. With the new Crossrail rolling stock...
Ill be working at the selection days in London. Ill report what its like from the Network Rail side of the fence lol.
When is your selection day? A few of my class mates are based in Leeds, they may be there aswell.
We have had signal failures at London Liverpool Street due to the track circuit being dropped. This can happen due to a number of causes. Fillings from rail grinding trains bridging IBJ's and causing the track cuircuit to drop. This can also happen when two rail fastenings are close to each...
He was a distant lookout and had his back to the train that hit him. He was standing next to a set of points and trains had been going through the S&C. This train was going down the turnout, where he was standing. He was in a possition of safety for the throughroute but not in a possition of...
Rush hour going into London on the Great Eastern is very frequent. I'm based at Romford and we get a train past every 3 or 4 mins for about an hour on the Mains. Crossrail will use this route too but on the Electrics (Slows). So it will be a train every 3ish mins on both lines. Mad!
I saw a thread a while ago which looked quite fun so here are some more Three Letter Abreviations. (Don't have to be three letters lol). See if you can get these right.

I have a RAILTRACK standards book. GO/RT3011 Personalised Rule Book Number 11 that I found in a container full of paperwork that we cleared out. It was printed in August 1999 and contains all the standards and procedures for Persons in charge of working on Railway Infrastructure. Pretty neat find.
Some things are stated in Miles and Yards and some things are stated in Miles and Chains. There is no real standard to specify what you should write it as. I've written it in both formats and its accepted.
We used to have cab passes that were just a piece of card saying that you were permitted to ride in the cab to carry out Supervisory Inspection Duties. This has been replaced with a booklet now with a lovely picture of yourself in it. Still drivers can refuse to have you in the cab if they don't...
Yea, I know. I wouldn't know anything about clutches of it wasn't for that. Seems silly for Track to get assessed on taking them apart, when Signals have to look at them in the field but they don't get assessed on it in Portsmouth. :P
