Took the kids to Hitchin today to watch some trains. Up/down fast blocked so all trains on the slows. Quite handy as the down slow is right next to the fence at the car park.:)

Anyway...the 12.05 ex Kings Cross to Leeds rolled slowly by and I noticed in the cab of the DVT a camera. Looked permanent as it was inside some casing. Anyone know what it's for?

Looked too 'fixed' to be used as a one off for engineers etc. Here's hoping East Coast will provide passengers with a 'view from the front' via the web or something.

That would be good.

A lot of trains are now fitted with forward facing CCTV to record incidents such as fatalities, near misses, trespassers and the like for subsequent investigation.

They can come in handy - read a report from RAIB where a trackworker was killed at Whitehall Junction in Leeds a few years back and the forward facing camera showed that he did not move to a place of safety when the driver of the 333 sounded his horn.

If I remember correctly, the track worker thought he was in a position of safety?

He was a distant lookout and had his back to the train that hit him. He was standing next to a set of points and trains had been going through the S&C. This train was going down the turnout, where he was standing. He was in a possition of safety for the throughroute but not in a possition of safety for the turnout. Silly really...

Our trains have cameras on. Our TME (Track Maintenence Engineer) can log on and view all the cameras on the trains running on our patch. To make sure we acknowledge trains etc. :P

Obviously we can't tell what he thought. Sad thing is that for one mistake he paid the ultimate price. Must have been terrible for his family, but also the driver, who IIUI was a trainee.
