I can't see how the validity on the trains in question could be any different to that of 'Southern only' tickets

The stop flags in London call them school buses (though as you say, anyone can use them)
There is one anomaly, the 607 (not a school bus), which is in that range because it retains its trolleybus number.
They're probably air-conditioned; open windows will make the a/c ineffective. It's better when the windows can be locked in that case, a la London Overground
I think Oyster cards are made of considerably tougher stuff than contactless payment cards; the former are a challenge to break, the latter start peeling all too quickly.
