Great Central Railway News and Updates

It is interesting that there is a prominent Max Speed 100mph sign. Back in the late 60's my father and I were talking to the signal man at Little Bythorn (?) on the ECML and he was convinced that some Deltics took much less than 3 mins to cover the 5 miles in his section....so what was the...

Cheapest / Best value driver experiences

I think the GCR has done footplate rides in Quorn yard for £10 (?) at some events. They also do various packages for steam and diesel on the full line.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Thanks Railfan, glad your friend and his group enjoyed their day on the GCR. In other news, the boiler for 34039 Boscastle has returned and has been put on a Weltrol wagon. There is some more firebox work to do, then the purchase and installation of the tubes and superheater elements.

    Arresting Runaway Wagons

That was my experience in the early 70's at university! The cards had to be kept in order (a diagonal line drawn across the edge of the stack helped). If there was a mistake on a card, the computer stopped and you had to re punch the card, put the stack back into the computer office, and wait...

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

The GCR has at least 6 diesel running days advertised and two Diesel Gala events. They have a row of heritage diesels close to the platform at Loughborough and they advertise their diesel railcar services.

Future of the APT at Crewe heritage centre

I believe the tilt mechanism in at least one carriage is in working condition....at least it was a few years ago. I too would love to see it running again though. A slightly dubious thought ..... when a Pendolino is retired, if it was re nosed and repainted, would that do the trick??

Great Central Railway - Beer, Cider & Gin Festival 2025

There will be Boscastle Shed Tours on the Saturday and Sunday (20/21st Sept). They take place between 10.30 and 3.30. No need to book, just walk up to the shed and await the next guided tour - approx every 10 mins and they last 30 mins. They are free, but a donation towards the overhaul of...

Picture of Steam Loco at London Charing Cross

Well it reminded me of the "Flying Hamburger" German high speed three(?) carriage High speed DMU set that inspired Sir Nigel Gresley to produce the A4!

    Fox & Edwards events

They do appear to have a good relationship with the GCR....as today at Rothley shows.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Seen outside at Loughborough yesterday....there is the Spring Diesel Gala at the end of the month so lots of prep work being completed.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Of course the new GCR bridge over the MML was put in in a hurry in 2017 due to the imminent MML electrification through Loughborough....But will NR be first to have electric trains running under or will the GCR have trains running over? However the GCR are still awaiting Planning consent for...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Thanks Mr. SW. Apparently there was a battery fault on the class 20, discovered on Saturday morning, which was fixed by the afternoon.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Sunday was a training run for the Stewards, who will be with each group of guests, and to check out the timings/content/format. There are more details on the GCR website.

TPO Questions - What was it like working on these services?

As has been said, there is a dispensation, so the speed at pick up was around 50mph. The people on board were all working members of RVP/GCR/C&W. There are indeed older videos and I believe the (BR Mk1) set could be back in action later this year.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

The GCR are now offering a "Goods Experience" and it certainly is a different way of seeing the GCR - a brake van ride is part of the package.

TPO Questions - What was it like working on these services?

I think the Rail Vehicle Preservation group run the TPO mail coaches on the GCR, I believe they have a website for contact details. I did have a ride in the pick up coach on the GCR years ago and was surprised at how violent the pick up was at speed.

Heritage Railways - Making a Success of a Main Line Connection

There was a tamper which went along the line last year which I think went via the chord line to the MML.

Heritage Railways - Making a Success of a Main Line Connection

The GCR hopes to make a success of its main line connection when the Gap is bridged to the Northern section. They (GCR(N) ) had used the chord line to the Midland Main line to run gypsum trains but the closure of coal fired power stations has reduced demand for such traffic.

    Why do non-enthusiasts volunteer?

In our Windcutter team, there are a mix of people who just enjoy the, very niche, activity of keeping 16T steel mineral wagons running. However there are 4 retired, degree qualified, mechanical engineers, who had senior managerial/technical roles.....who now like getting their hands dirty -...
