Great Central Railway News and Updates

Thanks for the thanks! I am inclined to favour keeping the "Gap" project as a distinct thread as it is such a big project and hopefully the museum "Plan B" will emerge in due course.

How many of our Heritage Railways are in trouble?

Well we are 8 months on from the start of this thread and there have been No heritage railway closures. In fact, several are expanding/improving in terms of facilities and length. So Yes, they could all do with more money, and some are barely existing, others are struggling but expect to...

    Conflat & Container

Well done on getting the Van train hoses done and vac cylinders checked. The Conflat looks really good.

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

The car park has featured on the local radio news just now. NR say it will open -"Mid December" as there are still works to complete......but won't say what, and, to the casual observer, it all looks complete. Certainly most of it could open tomorrow!

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Thanks Cowley, as you will have realised, it is very much an "unofficial" information stream based on visits, talking to people on site and GCR publications. I got frustrated at the lack of up to date info and thought "Why don't they"......Then I thought "Well perhaps I could/should!" It...

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

Given that the car parking generates income, I'm very surprised at the lack of urgency about getting the newly created extra parking spaces into use......As for the subway entrance.....

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

Nothing appears to have changed since Nov 9th.......but they expect it to all be finished "next month".

Great Central Railway News and Updates

The new tender tank for 34039 "Boscastle", has now been delivered to Loughborough. Work on the tender chassis is continuing and the boiler is expected back from the South Devon Railway Engineering Co quite soon.

West Somerset Railway 'lost £800k last year' - BBC News

Although the headline figure looks (and is ) bad, it must be remembered that this is a 15 month accounting period with two "low" seasons and the line shutdown. So revenue is significantly lower and expenditure significantly higher - hence much of the big loss figure.

How many of our Heritage Railways are in trouble?

Also worth remembering that in absolute or relative terms travelling/working on a heritage railway must be less of a risk than playing many sports, horse riding, cycling, swimming etc....

    GCR Bridge Project

I expect that the refurbishment of the "Lattice work" will have been finished by now and so that could be returned and put back in place by the 13th? I wonder what the next move will be......engine shed or embankment.....or both?

    GCR Bridge Project

This is the Canal Bridge today, with its encasing "Tent", whilst they shot blast the underside.

    GCR Bridge Project

I think the intention is just to extend the platform a couple of coach lengths, the buildings on the existing platform would not be touched. However this will need some trackwork alteration, which will also be affected by the new engine shed plans and the route North across the "Gap". It all...

    GCR Bridge Project

Hi Andy I think it may be possible to put a single track in a bay formation as the platform is quite wide. However, operationally, it would be a bad idea, as it would mean passengers would find it a longer walk from the North end of platform 1 to the North end of platform 2. Also, if it were to...

    GCR Bridge Project

i see in Steam Railway and elsewhere that the GCR is investigating extending the Loughborough Station platform Northwards to get longer trains and keep the locomotive alongside the platform rather than under the overbridge. It would be nice if they could have a similar arrangement to the old...

    Future preservation of modern trains

I too enjoy the looking out of the front in a DMU set. But I am also looking forward to the irony of having a preserved HST going over the GCR "Gap" and an EMR HST going under it along the Midland Main Line ( I bet they will still be in use!).

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

I thought that was the case....but there certainly are a lot of spaces so it will be interesting to see how many are used. I was also surprised to see that there is no obvious provision for any electric car charging points. Given that rail use is generally environmentally advantageous, and many...

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

On the Southbound platform both PIS screens are working and all the lamp posts are complete in the car park - still not open though. However there doesn't appear to be any change in the subway entrance and they have now lifted about 15m of the "Dimpled" platform slabs at the South end of the...

    GCR Bridge Project

Here is a close up of the repaired section. It certainly looks to be significantly stronger now!
