    Sentence disgrace

Point of order, m'lud. How are we supposed to know that? If moderators moderate specific forums, and act as "ordinary" members on other forums, surely the members should be made aware of this allocation?

    Lille

It is not - it is available in France too. Here is the SNCF page advertising it.

How about this? €8 for one day's unlimited travel. :p

    favourite onboard catering offer

OT, but plural is panini (correct) or paninos (anglicised, but acceptable) but not panino nor paninis. Bravo :p Funnily enough, while I have heard "panini" used, for other Italian foods everyone seems to use only the anglicised plural: pizzas (not pizze), pastas (not paste), probably because...

Not stopping at Prestatyn - train too long

From VT website: What will form this service - can't they just open certain doors (or not open them, as the case may be)?

    Advanced purchase seat... seat taken!!

When it works - I seem to have had several instances of bad luck in this respect on VT. The most frustrating situation is when a lot of people have already boarded at Euston and suddenly the reservations indicators spring to life about 10 minutes before departure.

    Advanced purchase seat... seat taken!!

Thank goodness - I hope sanity prevails in these circumstances. No-one ever seems to have a problem with this on the many continental trains I've been on.

    12 Hour Pacer Bash

Well, that was a great read, 142094, really enjoyed it. Not clouded by a lot of jargon and oblique spotter/basher references - no offence at all to those who write like that: just it does restrict your audience somewhat, unfortunately! Actually, everyone who takes time to write a trip report...

Rail fares advice 'inadequate', says Which?

True. But you (not you personally; the generic you!) can't apply a simple commercial situation (a company is run for the benefit firstly of the shareholders) to the railways. Since TOCs get public money, there's the taxpayer involved as well as the shareholder and passenger (who is not just a...

    Class 360/2 Desiros in Thailand

The best way to get around Bangkok is by a combination of Skytrain and "express" boat (but do not buy the tourist one-day pass for the boat!) - and consequently it's a very good idea to stay in a hotel near one or the other.

Rail fares advice 'inadequate', says Which?

Well, I don't think the average passenger is going to come looking for you. There are a lot of things on the internet - it doesn't mean everyone knows about them. That's not the main issue though, is it? It may be the issue for TOCs and ticket office staff, but they are not the customers...

Rail fares advice 'inadequate', says Which?

Isn't that the same thing? Fares will go up if everyone knows the tricks - so let's keep them in the dark?

Rail fares advice 'inadequate', says Which?

I'm losing the logic a bit here. Are you saying, let's not rock the boat, we know how to get the cheapest fares, but as long as it doesn't get out to the general travelling public, the TOCs won't mind, so there are always going to be better deals available for the knowledgeable few than for the...

Rail fares advice 'inadequate', says Which?

That argument is so crystal clear, and so persuasive, one wonders why the government and/or user groups can't or won't do something about it.

St Pancras to Dungeness via HS1 and RH&DR

If you decide to stay in Folkestone, be warned that the choice of hotels is dire, and the place in general is a bit of a dump. I had to stay in the area for one night about a year-and-a-half ago. I did some research on Trip Advisor and found some horrendous reviews. Here's an example about...

Rail fares advice 'inadequate', says Which?

Well, what a surprise. I love this response from ATOC: What do they think, passengers deliberately want to pay more? And this from the DoT: *yawn*. And ATOC using statistics to suit themselves again. 16% of 1.3 billion journeys means a lot of dissatisfied customers.

Northern Rail Day ranger for £10!!!

Love it! A synonym would be "slimy".

Northern Rail Day ranger for £10!!!

As an outsider (I've never travelled on them except from Piccadilly to Oxford Road and back a couple of months ago), am I right in thinking that Northern has a certain reputation as the worst TOC in terms of poor rolling stock, overcrowding, and vicious RPIs?

    Greece

Apparently not. The trains are not going past Gevgelija just before the Greek border, even though it is only about 50 miles from Thessaloniki.
