This suggests that for safety and to minimise ground vibration from traffic, the tunnelling is only being done at night.
If this is the case, the tunnelling rate is probably reduced to one ring per night. Down to 1.4m per 24 hr day while Fillie is under the A666.
Only just! The problems were enormous leading to insufficient serviceable stock to run a service. The transformers, rectifiers and motors gave trouble. The 25kV/6.25kV tap changing transfomers being particularly troublesome.
As part of the bigger plan, the changeover needed to happen...
It seems to have gone very quiet. I would have expected by now that the halfway point has been passed, yet no sign of a NR announcement to that effect. Suggests there may be trouble!
Unfortunately no indication of distance travelled or when the picture was taken.
The second picture looking forward towards the old tunnel, shows bales of straw on the left hand side. We saw straw in the earlier pictures when they were going through bad ground. What is the straw used for...
By estimating the width of the road and NR's figures for lane closures we can get an idea of the rate of tunnelling that the Fillie team expects.
My guess at the road width is 26 metres based on the Highways Agency's design manual for Roads and Bridges for an 'A' road dual carriagway...
Although we made a guess as to where Fillie was on 21st of September, it looks as though they will have been achieving a tunnelling rate of about 2 metres per day by the A666 crossing. This is way short of the hoped for rate of 6 m per day.
For the final half of the bore, 2 m/day puts...
This could be a good thing as the Judge is not being asked to decide the relative merits of the schemes, but whether or not the correct procedures were followed during the Public Inquiry. Not knowing much about cricket and probably railways too, High Court judge Mrs Justice Beverley Lang can...
Yes, I noticed the straps joining the segments together and thought this was unusual and an indication of problems.
However, the CrossRail tunnels also have straps joining segments in places, so evidently not all that unusual. See 360 deg video
I have just done a similar excercise and reckon 16 lights are visible plus the one just inside the entrance. The lights seem to me to be at every fourth ring, so I estimate 16 x 4 x 1.4 m = 89 metres. If Fillie is 20 metres long the total length tunnelled may be around 109 metres. Leaving 161...
On the website referred to above, there is an interactive map where different structures can be selected. Depending on what is proposed a detailed map can be selected.
Having some knowledge of the area I discovered two errors, road over rail bridges and one road under rail (A41) to be out of...
