I commute York to Derby and back once a week. So far, I’ve been on refurbed units 3 times.
When will the refurbished units outnumber the non-refurbed ones? I.e. when will it be more likely that I’ll be on a new one?
(Apologies if this is already answered somewhere in the prior 70 pages.)
I noticed very many pointwork track panels stacked up beside the track at Swinton Junction as my train went through there this morning. The "Forthcoming engineering work" page on nationalrail

suggests that...
Certainly could have been - at the time I wouldn’t know the difference. But were 4TCs often seen that far east? As you put, they were usually used on the line to Weymouth.
An extremely long time ago…(21st June 1986 so says wikipedia!)
The first Network Day, celebrating the creation of Network SouthEast, allowed very cheap travel all across the region.
One of the trains I took was from Hastings to Ashford. It was an EMU (of type unremembered) propelled by a class...
What system is that screenshot from please? The TD berth in siding 2 (nearest to platform 11) currently contains the description “LOCO”. Maybe something else has tied it to the TOPS number.
Way back...
It used to be that Fishguard Harbour had the most regular service of any station. It had a train at 0305, and another at 1505, Monday through Sunday. (I may have mis-remembered the exact times.) This meant that, if you missed one train, you had EXACTLY 12 hours to wait for the...
The four-stars description (what to put into a berth if the conditions for a step have occurred but the from-berth is empty) is configurable. On some schemes, *X** is used for compatibility with adjacent TD systems- ie older ones that can only handle a second character of A-Z.
Just an observation really…
After I read about the above incident, I looked on OpenTrainTimes, and counted 23 trains in three different queues - Up Fast, Up Slow, and Up Hertford - at a stand with the front train only 30 or so minutes late. Just gives an idea of how full the southern end of the...
(Should I have read the last 11 pages of this thread? Probably. Sorry.)
HS2 was originally mooted to alleviate the WCML Capacity issues by building WCML tracks 5 and 6 on a greenfield site, rather than alongside the existing 4 tracks.
This aim then morphed into an "I can go...
Following the fire near Glasgow Central station this week, it's got me thinking...
a: the fire could have been so much worse, and might have caused the station to burn. Fortunately it didn't.
b: the fire, when small, was un-put-out-able thanks partly to the lithium batteries in the vape shop...
Most trains on the network travel from A to B. Such trains may reverse here and there, but the purpose of the journey is to GET somewhere. This also includes shunts from one platform at A to another platform at A; or, in extemis, a shunt from one platform at A to a reversing siding, then back...
Yup - saw it from my office window! I remarked to my colleagues that I didn’t know any 31s were still operating. And most of them were too young to know what a Class 31 is.
Nostalgia alert - takes me back to travelling between (boarding) school and home, Shrewsbury to Cambridge, in the early...
Sheffield to Doncaster stopping services extended on to Adwick? Not that I've ever been on any of these. It would seem that this extension is simply so that the train isn't using up valuable platform capacity at Doncaster while turning round.
The Rule I'd question is in the Track Circuit Block Regulations; what the signaller must do if there is a Track Circuit failure.
The Rule (and I paraphrase, as I don't have the Regulations to hand) is that the signaller should NOT set the route, but should key all sets of points in the route...
How/where do the Fort William day coaches get maintained? It would appear that they run from Fort William to Edinburgh in the evening with the Up Sleeper coaches, then get attached to the Down Sleeper in the early hours of the morning to go back to Fort William. How do they get to Polmadie or...
I was on board on Tuesday from Derby to York (on 1E44 - 1500 from Derby). At least half of the passengers in First Class had "XCountry" lanyards on, and were taking photos and surveys.
Technically, those on board who wanted to do that portion of track (the crossover from the Down Goods Loop to the Bishop Auckland single line) will have to find another train going that way. Their train didn't do the track - it did the ballast instead. (Depending on which coach they were in.)
