    Cambridge South new station opening

The existing busway stops are in between he Astra Zeneca headquarters building and the Royal Papworth hospital - probably a 1-2 minute walk to the station. As built I'm not sure the station forecourt is suitable for busses; it looks like the focus is on taxis, car drop-off and bicycles...

Do we think the 00:11 to Cambridge is the first service or will it be something later in the day?

    Cambridge South new station opening

There seem to be two new paths through the park. One is further south than the one in my photos and has a rough compacted stone finish like most of the other paths in the park. The one in my photos is to the north near the busway and has the hard high friction surfacing.

Maybe they will spray paint the grass on the roof red white and blue.....

On further inspection (in cooler weather!) I think the path surface is quite hard, but of a high friction material (lots of fine gravel bonded to it) which is surprisingly effective at slowing down a bike, at least compared to the tarmac on the parallel busway path. Here are some more photos...

The first part of the path through the country park to the station has been opened recently. Here are some photos showing the combined foot/cycle path. It seems to have a very soft surface making it quite hard work to cycle on…

I wonder if anyone has considered if the phase 2 biomedical campus plans could include a new junction onto Babraham Road and if that might provide a temporary relief to the long road bridge. Routing traffic through the existing hospital campus being a non-starter…

    Cambridge South new station opening

Thanks @Magdalia, that’s very informative. Maybe the busway A route could be split at the station and served by double deckers to the north freeing up single deckers for a shuttle service. Or a place is found near the station that can serve conventional buses…

    Cambridge South new station opening

A fair question. My hope was that between whippet and stage coach there would be sufficient spare vehicles available to run an intensive service. If spare drivers were available I expect you would need (or at least not be able to utilise) no more than 10-15 which must be considerably less than...

    Cambridge South new station opening

For the case of planned work, I would have thought an intensive RRB service could make use of the busway to ferry passengers to the main station and Trumpington park and ride for onward travel. I would guesstimate the road between AZ and The Papworth would provide space to queue and board busses...

I think the last prior proposal was as part of the Cambridge South works but they were able to drop it and still meet the service requirements. To the south of Cambridge South land take is required near to a scheduled monument to four track and there needs to be a strong justification for that.

Indeed. There are marker lights embedded in the path but that is no the same as street lighting. A compromise on encroachment into the park I suspect. Using the eastern exit and then the busway would mean a fully lit route.

I asked an AI to model this looking back 30 years and forward 10 and the economic centre is indeed moving in that direction. Maybe by 2100 it might make it to the station. Obviously take this with a massive grain of salt... 1778505033 (image attached is a map of Cambridge City Centre showing the...

    Cambridge South new station opening

Agreed it seems to be smaller on this side than the one facing the park but maybe that is an illusion. There is now a totem on the street to make it a bit more obvious where the station is for those coming from the hospital. I am hoping we will shortly see a run round all the local signage...

The pictures are doing it a disservice by being from the ‘back’ and elevated. It looks much softer and natural from the park side at ground level.
