My first visit to this rural terminal last week, and it has raised some questions.
I was expecting a simple single line terminus, but noticed the complex of sidings on the left hand side, reached by a reverse shunt out of the platform road.
Quail Maps labels these sidings Magnox, DRS and Engs. I...
Coming back to historical services on this line.
My memory is of very poorly patronised local services, almost always Derby DMUs from Allerton Depot (the ones with the 4 character headcodes). In fact one of my only two journeys as the only passenger on a train was between Runcorn and Chester (...
I went on many of these from Chester that had originated from North Wales at some unearthly hour.
Very often we were routed via the WCML, so it was then a process of elimination. Left at Primrose Hill was Southend or Clacton. Then West London line ( change to a class 33 at Mitre Bridge) and if I...
I have read the "Changes at Crewe" thread with interest, but I cannot see why the Chester shuttles have been largely switched to platform 10. Of course this is the only platform nit to have a canopy, presumably when the station was last refurbished, its regular use was not envisaged. There...
Similarly Arriva's X4 goes from Chester station to Cheshire Oaks half hourly, so 4 buses an hour. Chester Plus Bus does not reach out to Cheshire Oaks. Nevertheless going via Chester and bus would be a considerable time saving.
Chester - Crewe has always been disproportionately expensive, even dating back to the age of steam when there was, in theory at least, mileage based pricing. Certainly buying Chester - Shrewsbury and starting or finishing short has been a local trick for many tears. Long before the days of ATW!
I notice that today the Chester to Crewe shuttle is being operated by the usual Arriva Trains Wales 150/2 but strengthened with an Arriva Trains Northern 150/2 (specifically 150201). Assuming this is a loan, presumably this is in anticipation of the VTWC strike since cancelled. Certainly four...

Does this help?
Interesting that with all the recent 'bus wars' on this route, 26 years ago the service was only hourly and no evening...
So, to condense all this interesting discussion.
I assume I can still buy a Concession GM Wayfarer at an 'out of boundary' station (in my case Chester) by showing the Booking Clerk a 'non Manchester' ENCTS (in my case, Cheshire).
Can anyone confirm that this is the case?
In which case, the...
Well, if you want to see a rail replacement bus service as it should be run, go to Merseyside. The current bus replacements between Birkenhead and Liverpool are excellent; a fleet of brand new Arriva Wright's Streetdecks complete with Wi-Fi and charging points. A bus driver friend is full of...
Well the sidings at Poole have been used (relatively) recently to stable passenger stock.
The photos were taken on the 19th April 2008 and show a Hooton - Poole charter.
Maybe a bit off topic...
Anyone remember the Voyager Railcard? Only issued at Stoke on Trent and giving half price off-peak travel for the holder and up to four people (? the details are a little hazy now). I have come across one with an expiry date of 24th January 1987, but I can't remember...
Bit naughty this one.
I noticed that the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway have not used signal boxes at Keighley and Haworth (Yard) Jc. I am sure they have plans for them.
Also the L&Y 'box at the junction outside Bradford Interchange (Mill Lane?) is still standing and in good order. A very...
Has anybody noticed this buried in the terms and conditions?
Are there any restrictions on use during peak times?
Yes. Travel using a Club 55 ticket is not permitted before 0930 Monday to Friday except between the following locations:
Shrewsbury to or from Aberystwyth/Pwllheli
