How do they plan to link Derby city centre to HS2?

The first clues of what's to come may come through franchise invitation to tender on East Midlands this year as to when the franchise ends, but I'd expect more clues in 2018 with the CrossCountry franchise end date and I'd start to get very worried if someone at the DfT hasn't included clues on...

How do they plan to link Derby city centre to HS2?

There are six trains per hour in the most recent Oct 2013 schedule - so 12 per hour counting both directions - that could of course change with the recent changes at Sheffield. I strongly suspect that a private car or taxi ride directly to Toton will be the most appealing way of access, the...

22 class 185 units being released by TPE - Where could they go?

The peak hours service from Dore could be much better than it is, the first to leave there is the 6:27am semi-fast, which gets to Manchester Piccadilly for 7:34am, 67 minutes later. The 7:14am train stops at less stations and manages to get into Manchester for 8:02am (48 minutes), but is...

22 class 185 units being released by TPE - Where could they go?

City to city services are useless for commuters, it costs £15 to park at Sheffield, there's no trams or buses at get people from the outskirts of town to Sheffield in time for the pre 7am trains - i.e. The ones that get people to Manchester before 8:30am - The car park at Dore is full by the...

22 class 185 units being released by TPE - Where could they go?

Perhaps paint them dark blue and white, with a yellow feature panel at the front... Call them, Erm... British Rail ? Just teasing ;-)

How do they plan to link Derby city centre to HS2?

On the basis that HS2 Phase 2 hasn't been approved for construction yet, I'd suggest that local/regional linking services would be low on any local transport authority agenda. The way I see things going are as follows... - High capacity car parking at the station - Highway improvements on the...

22 class 185 units being released by TPE - Where could they go?

Tell that to people who use busier intermediate stations like Chinley and Dore who have about two semi-fast trains to choose from each morning and evening peak.

    Opinions On The Class 158

The EMT 158s are a good ride, with comfy seats (for me) and much preferred ride vs the 185s running the same Hope Valley route. Downsides, include aircon problems, doors that open without user interaction and definitely a bad toilet smell. Arguably the end door formation isn't great for high...

    HS2 - A vanity project?

I'm sure if you are getting at this, but the larger the diameter tunnel, the greater the load is on the roof and wall segments, this will scale increasingly as the diameter increases.

    HS2 - A vanity project?

Lots more, largest TBM available today can only do 15m radius, so you would need to use a different technique. I'm not even sure the New Austrian tunnelling method could go to 20m diameter.

    Class 195 allocations and formations

The franchise agreement is rather interesting in that I note some 5x23m services to be implemented - that's presumably a peak time 3+2 car paired unit rather than a 5 car unit.. These include; - Manchester-Southport - Manchester-Kirkby - Manchester-Clitheroe All diesel, presumably non-connect...

    First class obsolete?

I'll often purchase first class for leisure trips between Sheffield and London, for three reasons, first, the seats are bigger, I'm 6ft 4 and built like a brick outhouse, plus it's always less busy and also when I travel it's often only 10-20% more than a standard advance fare. I feel that...

    Perfect CrossCountry train

This is a very important point, XC needs more seats but doesn't need nine car 802s, that would simply kill the financial case of XC. The current 220/221 have 200-250ish seats per 4/5 car unit, reforming these as longer units could give up to 320 seats as a six car unit, up to 390 seats as a...

    Perfect CrossCountry train

As I said above, there are three services a day that run as a doubled up unit, 2 in one direction, 1 in the other - typically a 4+5 passes south through Leeds just after 4pm.

    Perfect CrossCountry train

There are just three services a day that run doubled up.

    Perfect CrossCountry train

I'd be reforming the 220/221s into longer units, ordering a small package of Class 802 bi-modes to replace the HSTs and to compensate for the reformed 220/221s, then look at picking up some more 170s, reforming into a flexible fleet that works with the existing stations they call at.

    Spotters/enthusiasts and wearing hi vis

I was returning from site a few months ago, I'd been on the M6 which is a orange hi-viz site, then visited a local highway scheme in Crewe, so had my orange bottoms on. I bought a coffee on the platform and paid for it, then as I walked away, I was called back for some extra change, I looked...

Indeed, a claim that I challenged regularly... How times change ;-)

    Everything wrong with Pacers

Haha, not the seats, the carriage ;-)
