    As an oldie my definition of a conductor would be the person who issues tickets on a bus or someone who accompanies a train driver over a route the driver is not familliar with.

    The castings attached to the roof beams are the top bearings for the (usually) hand operated cranes, used for unloading heavy items from the wagons.
