    The station proximity poll.

I've never timed myself. I reckon I could do it in under 10 minutes if I rushed but I always give myself enough time to make sure there's no need.

    WCML loco hauled is back

The headcode of the 18:43 Friday only (I think...) Euston to Crewe, the scheduled service operated by the Pretendolino.

Flitwick to Milton Keynes Central 22/11/11

There's a once a week (!) bus from Flitwick to MK and would you believe it, it arrives at 10:35 on a Tuesday. Maybe worth bearing in mind although obviously you're up a certain creek if the bus breaks down. http://www.grantpalmer.com/route%20timetables/Route197%20%28Tue%29.pdf I think I like...

    Feltham - London1256 Travel Card

Yes. Likewise a Zone 6 only Travelcard (if such a thing even exists) would be valid on a 73 down Oxford Street.

    Group Save with Chiltern

Are rules different in Chiltern-land? I've definitely got a Super Off-Peak Day Travelcard with GroupSave discount before.

Ore Tunnel work to close Marshlink rail line

Could you not have a 171 fuelled at Selhurst shuttling down to Ashford every morning via Redhill and Tonbridge? Sincere question, I'm not sure if this is practical or not.

    Famous rail enthusiasts

I think James May is interested in engineering in general but not specifically railways.

Bedford St Johns to Bedford - timings

I believe you are correct, although the platform (it is 1a) is electrified for some reason.

    Blackburn to Portsmouth harbour

Might be worth considering a cab although I have no idea how much it would cost.

    Worst bus interchanges/stations

I think the same applies to it's near neighbour at Northampton. It works well operationally, maybe not as well as Bedford because it's four or five times the size, but my lord it has to be one of the most depressing places on the planet. That chippy at Bedford is really nice by the way, and...

    Smoking bylaw question

I'm surprised it got that far tbh. Last time I saw someone smoking on the platform, a police officer told him to either leave the station or put it out and that was the end of it. I don't think the copper saw him take another puff and throw the lit fag on the line mind you...

Off Peak Day Return Sandy-Cambridge is £12.80.

    Milton Keynes TO Cambridge

http://www.stagecoachx5.com/ The bus/coach fare is £11.40. If you get anywhere near that low on the railway, even restricting yourself to specific trains and such, I'll be very impressed indeed. I don't especially like travelling long distances by road either, but it's two hours, direct...

    TV Alert Tonight (Monday)

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the facts? I was a little sceptical over the claim that it took 18 seconds to turn the HST signal to red.

    Problems at Southern

At Coastway stations without barriers nearly everyone buys on board anyway in my experience, despite ticket machines on most platforms and (apparently empty) threats of Penalty fares. Guards never complain as they get commission. I once had a guard ask me if I needed a ticket and he looked quite...

Clapham Jct and Waterloo, advice needed!

SWT's entire diesel fleet of 158s and 159s is based at Salisbury. 442s. The 460s might still live there (I'm not sure) but they aren't in service much (if at all) any more.

    fare evaders

It certainly isn't practical to have barriers at every station. Putting them at stations like Golf Street and Dovey Junction is very obviously going to cost FAR more than it earns in revenue, not to mention they would have to be staffed at all times anyway.

Adult Caught on Child Ticket going through Barrier

You should have sold them (impartial retailing and all that jazz) taken your commission and then immediately charged them a full fare adult ticket
