Milton Keynes TO Cambridge

Hello,

I need some help I am afraid. On Saturday I need to get from Milton Keynes (or Fenny Stratford) to Cambridge and back in order to watch the might Darlo (probably fail to) beat Cambridge in a top quality BSP clash - BUT I have been let down for a lift. Can any one suggest a reasonable price and route to get me there.

I am easy on route, toc and time but I must be there before 1500! A ticket seems to be about £70 which is a bit much!.

I know i can use the X5 bus but I am a bit unsure on coming back as I will need a few pints to ease me through the game and i will be more comfortable on the train ( if you follow )

The X5 is really the best way. You will be ok there is a toilet on the X5 coaches.

The bus/coach fare is £11.40. If you get anywhere near that low on the railway, even restricting yourself to specific trains and such, I'll be very impressed indeed. I don't especially like travelling long distances by road either, but it's two hours, direct, limited stop on a luxury coach. No changes, no restrictions to specific journeys, and I'm sure far cheaper.

If you really want to minimise bus mileage, go to Bedford and get local bus to Sandy/Biggleswade, or down to Luton for a bus to Stevenage then a train via Hitchin to Cambridge.

But the connections will be dire, fares more expensive and it will take all day.

Can I reserve a seat on the X5? I have been on that route on a Saturday and it is rammed - i dont want to be left behind and miss the match.

Can i get a train from Sandy to Cambridge - i chance of a lift there has appeared!

The £11.40 ticket on the X5 is a Day Rider Gold ticket which allows unlimited travel on the X5 and local services in Bedford, Cambridge etc. So you could break the journey if you don't want to be stuck on a bus too long (they run every half an hour). You could use it to take a trip over the old Cambridge-St.Ives line (now a busway) as well as catching a bus to the ground.

Not sure where the £70 fare comes in (unless you are doing it as first class singles)

Off peak day return MKC to Cambridge is £45.40
If you buy a Network Railcard the fare becomes £29.95 so the saving almost pays for the railcard which is valid for the next year!

Using the FCC half hourly non-stop Kings Cross to Cambridge (hourly it goes on to Kings Lynn) services would be the quickest if you wanted to do it all by rail.
Good job it is not next week as there are engineering works meaning buses Royston-Waterbeach next weekend!

Milton Keynes to Cambridge Bus MK is £10.50 for a day return. Railcards seem ok.

If you want a train, obviously more expensive.
