Putting the practical reasons for this aside (inconviencing less people, London to Leeds is argueably more important strategically etc), EMT and VTEC are the same company, just different branding, so no competition. Also Im pretty sure it is cheaper to short form a MML service than cancel a KGX...
Simple answer, the timetable simply doesnt work and there are too many trains through East Croydon. All its takes is a train 2 minutes late at Windmill Bridge Jn and its 10 minutes late. If it goes to Southampton, it gets regulated behind the stopper on the way back. Ends up 25+ late at Horsham...
Saw this and worked something out
There are on southern:
46x 4/455 units
20x 3/313 units
Which = 66 units
To replace these:
30 x 379 off lease units
36 x 376 ex southeastern units
Which = 66 units...
Southeastern take on 36x458s from SWR to replace 376 units.
Internally within...
Any technical reason why the 707/458 units could be reduced to four car units to serve the tulse hill lines and replace 455's?
Or indeed in the 707s case extend them to 8 car units?
Regarding 313 replacement on the coastway, i believe the plan is they will go when certain southern routes go over to thameslink and the freed up 377s go to the coastway.
The 707s in theory could replace 455s on southern metro work but would need platforms on the tulse hill line, the Wimbledon...
Rumour has it that the extra loop services will be southern services going into London Bridge using freed up stock when other southern services go over to thameslink (eg London bridge to horsham)
I've always thought the Wimbledon loop services should go to London Bridge via Peckham Rye. Then the Beckenham Junction/West Croydon terminators be turned into thameslink services. Would build in more durability to the thameslink service. I guess the key obstacle would be tulse hill and paths...
Rather strangely weren't some class 450's dragged to the watercress line for commissioning/training even though there was/is no 3rd rail? Or am I dreaming?
If you're traveling down to the south west, keep your eyes peeled for a beached whale right by the railway between Dalwish Warren and Dalwish. I thought I'd gone mad at first!
By chance I had a ride for the first time on one of these today. Was supposed to be from Three Bridges to London Bridge but the train was terminated at Gateway due to very late running. Although it was only a 5 minute run, I was really impressed. It was quiet and airy without ghastly operating...
Should every carriage should have a wheelchair space then? Should every toilet on the train be accessible?
Let me state again, every train should be accessible for all (I still think there is more that can be done, more brail for example). But the number of people that need these facilities...
