I think at the time Class 319 were only allowed to run as 4 coach or 8 coach. Only London Midland and later LNWR have been able to run 12 coach services using them. I haven't seen the 2001 timetable but the 2003 working timetable shows the 18:07 Victoria-Brighton as a 319 but the service an hour...
There were actually some regular scheduled Central Trains services from Birmingham to Liverpool Lime Street that called regularly at Winsford, Hartford and many at Acton Bridge. Some services called at most of these + Mossley Hill.
Do you happen to know which Portsmouth Direct Line services used the 442/Wessex Electrics? I have heard that they did go to Portsmouth but from the 1990s/2000s I can only find images of the slam door stock or occasionally Desiros.
According to this South West Trains timetable the London Waterloo to Brighton service was the 0712 from Waterloo. I am surprised they needed 12 coaches for it as there are much faster services from London Victoria to Brighton...
I think a few services did have Desiros from late 2003 or early 2004. Waterloo to Basingstoke and Alton for example and Ascot to Guildford, but perhaps not the long distance services.
Interestingly a lot of the services you mention from the 1980s were still around much later the same timetable...
For some reason I thought the service was Beckenham Junction to London Bridge, though I had heard of Southern/Connex South Central 319s being used on it. Interestingly I had seen a comment somewhere from someone saying they had used a Southern/South Central 319 to get to school, it must've been...
Even in the 2004 timetable, there was an early morning Waterloo to Wareham terminator at 0730 and a Wareham to Waterloo at 0720 and at 1641. Was it always a 442 or were Desiros or Slam door stock used as well? Here is the timetable...
What operated the Blackpool to Euston route? I know the routes from Euston to Rochdale/Manchester Victoria/Airport were Express Sprinters or EMU (322/3?)
I had actually heard of the London Waterloo to Manchester services, Wales and West also did services from Waterloo to Cardiff, Carmarthen and...
The Virgin XC into Paddington was until 2003, the times seem to show on the timetables here: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/operation-princess-what-was-the-intended-timetable.220559/
I can actually find the Waterloo to Brighton service on the 2003-04 Winter timetable...
I created a thread about historic and terminated routes and services a couple of days ago so I have a few more ideas, as far as I know, a lot of the services with unusual calling points or routing are in the former Network Southeast area.
South West Trains (and possibly NSE before them) had a...
That's a good one, I seem to remember someone mentioning Anglia Railways and Basingstoke on Railforums. Could it get from Woking to Stratford without reversing? Also was it ever double turbostars to form a train of 4-6 coaches or were very few people using the service?
I've seen a few threads on Railforums as a whole recently about historic allocations and diagrams, and it reminded me of historic or terminated services and routes on the UK network. In particular I want to know the years the services ran from and to, the routing and the rolling stock used, and...
There were some Virgin West Coast services that started or terminated at Carlisle on most weekdays and only went to/from Glasgow on Fridays. I even created a railworks scenario for one of them a couple of years ago.
I definitely know there was a 15:35 or 15:30 (depending on the year) London...
Sort of because pretty much WCML services into Glasgow Central do call at Motherwell, whereas services stopping at stations in the Trent Valley seem to be fairly sporadic on VT or Avanti.
Virgin Trains and Avanti have had quite a few of these services. Trains to Glasgow Central calling at Lockerbie but not Motherwell. A southbound service from Glasgow Central to I think Crewe in the evening, calling at Carstairs but not Motherwell at one point. Back in the days when Virgin ran...
I remember the XC to Leeds as I went on that 17:25 Plymouth to Leeds from Bristol to Birmingham a couple of times. However the Edinburgh and Glasgow Virgin Trains service I meant was via Carlisle, it arrived at Glasgow before reversing out to Edinburgh. The return went to Glasgow from Edinburgh...
There were also unusual stopping patterns under Virgin XC, with a small number of trains to and from Scotland calling at both Edinburgh and Glasgow Central and some from Newcastle going via both Leeds and Doncaster.
Not sure about the line speeds in Scotland as I live down south, but there may be 100 mph sections on the WCML from Edinburgh to Glasgow via Carstairs or between Glasgow Central and Lanark as they share these tracks with the fast trains to Glasgow.
When Southern ran as far as Milton Keynes Central would the 377 reach 100 mph on that section?

With the diesel transpenine desiros I know there were a number of locations where they could reach max speed on the WCML and ECML.
