    Stupid questions from passengers

Had a lady call up late at night (when I was in a call centre for a number of TOCs) absolutely lose her rag because I couldn't say if her train would be on time tomorrow. Apparently "no planned disruptions or alterations" wasn't sufficient  Meanwhile on a station, we once had two...

Wizz Air launches 'all you can fly' annual deal

I think my record is £81.99 for a Wizz flight from Budapest to Gatwick two hours in advance - when I turned up to the airport and saw that my Ryanair flight was delayed by 14 (!) hours and I decided that the EU261 compensation wasn't worth the fester.

    Eurobahn numbering

I think you've had 429017 - with the other end numbered as 429517. This happens regularly - eg ICE1 power cars have one numbered 4010xx and the other 4015xx. Cantus (around Kassel/Göttingen) has an even more confusing approach - where it has two different sets of numbering. For example, a unit...

Flying from Ireland, destination Sheffield. Which airport is better: Leeds/Bradford or Manchester?

The usual way of getting out of Leeds Bradford Airport would be the A1 bus (£2, contactless or cash on board) to Leeds then a train from there. It's about 40 minutes or so on the bus then a short walk to Leeds Station. The good news is that Northern will usually flog cheap Advance tickets for...

Alternatives to Trainline outside UK & Ireland

The only third party app I've really used abroad is KOLEO for Poland - as the actual PKP site is disastrously bad. They'll also flog you all sorts of local operator tickets, day passes etc. Similarly Jakdojade is the best for trams/buses and inner city stuff. The Česke Drahy "Můj Vlak" app is...

Rail & Sail (via Cairnryan) Experiences

Following up - we arrived on time (and passed a hefty cruise ship on the way in). Transfer to the bus to Belfast was pretty simple, too. Turn right out of the terminal and there's a bus stand for the 96. The Citylink (well, today it was an Airport Express branded bus) to Europa also pulls up...

Rail & Sail (via Cairnryan) Experiences

I decided to bite the bullet and give this a go today - £33 walk up fare (with Railcard) from Newcastle to Belfast via Ayr and the ferry seemed like a nice cheap adventure! No ticket checks until past Paisley on the whole trip - was expecting a few quizzical looks from a Belfast ticket but the...

Driver/Guard Bells/Buzzers/Beepers used on trains in other countries.

They haven't done this for quite a while. I have indeed witnessed someone try to launch themselves through one of these open doors! Instead, they now seem to have an odd way of just dispatching on time (even if the signal is at danger) and letting the train sit there locked up. My record is 15...

    Chisinau to Sofia (via Bucharest)

Ah - Bucharest to Chisinau is enabled for this. Bucharest to Sofia isn't (for some reason).

    Chisinau to Sofia (via Bucharest)

Thanks for this - my hotel is about a 15-min walk from Visternichen so a short hop on the D1 is probably quite feasible. Revaca looks *possible* but maybe one for another visit! Cheers - yes I remember you discussing the friendly guard on the Bucharest-Sofia service! Sounds like I should at...

End of the line for Paris’ iconic metro ticket

    Budapest to Belgrade (and Bar)

There seems to be a 2x daily service from Subotica to Novi Sad via Sombor (very slow) if you put the stations into the Srbijavoz website: https://w3.srbvoz.rs/redvoznje

    Chisinau to Sofia (via Bucharest)

Hello all, In October I'll be flying to Chisinau (landing early afternoon on the 12th) then taking the overnight train to Bucharest on the 13th, arriving at 0635 on the 14th. That part all looks fairly simple - with online booking 30 days ahead and the ability to print off/show tickets on a...

Cross Country Cancellations - Emergency Timetable

The 1745 ex-Reading (1927 from New Street) is usually rammed beyond belief on departure from Birmingham so I'm glad they've at least kept that. It is however, without fail, usually a four-car 220, so this might make for similarly cramped conditions south of Birmingham.
