    Birmingham to York

No problem :) It is a shame - HSTs are only really possible on day trips heading south-west from Birmingham...

    Birmingham to York

You'll almost certainly be on a Voyager, although some HSTs do run that route (mainly northbound in the afternoon & evening).

    1A91 Today (10/08/12)

Hello, Would anyone with access to internal railway systems be able to check which power cars were used on today's (Friday 10th August) 1A91 1400 Penzance to London Paddington? Thanks in advance, David

Steam Railmotor certified for mainline running

If they were to use the Railmotor on the St Ives branch, something like Winter Sundays would probably be best. You could either run it before normal services start at 12ish (although that would require St Erth signal box to be opened earlier presumably), or take over the service for the day...

London Midland 110mph running from Monday 10th December

According to Network Rail's Rules of the Plan 2011, trains scheduled to either attach or detach at Northampton must be booked to call there for at least 5 minutes. Combined with 4 minute headways, this means at least one the portions must be stopped in Northampton for at least 9 minutes, not...

    Your favourite railway stations?

I really like St Erth in Cornwall, there's a lovely atmosphere and on a busy Summer Saturday with passengers changing in their hundreds from main line train to branch train and vice-versa it still has some of the magic of the old Great Western - plus the semaphores add to it! I just hope they...

Stock transfers you would like to see

They aren't any better, it makes no difference whatsoever, other than perhaps the tiny amount of added weight from the third rail equipment. But this will make no discernable difference whatsoever, its just more expensive (presumably) to fit trains for dual-voltage operation, and there's not a...

Timetables/WTT for VT's former Pompey services

They were about every two hours in 1999, interworking with a two-hourly Central Trains Cardiff - Birmingham via Worcester train (so they ended up pretty uneven arriving at each termini). These are the details of all the WW trains serving Birmingham New Street on a Monday-Friday. 0600 Cardiff...

Stock transfers you would like to see

The 350/2s aren't too bad provided they're kept on the London commuter services - the routes the 321s used to operate. Equally, they'd be fine on services like Walsall - Birmingham - Wolverhampton, but the 350/1s are far more suitable for London - Crewe, London - Birmingham and Birmingham -...

Timetables/WTT for VT's former Pompey services

There were a delightful number of bizzare services back in W&W days. These are from the Summer 1999 timetable. 0550 Haverfordwest to Portsmouth Harbour 0855 Pembroke Dock to Brighton (SO) 1543 Milford Haven to Holyhead (SO) 0900 Treherbert to Lostwithiel (arrive 1429) 1915 Birmingham New...

Stock transfers you would like to see

I think it is believed that the three new 350/3s will replace 323s which will be cascaded onto the Cross City - see Pumbaa's post further up the thread. The 350/1s should be used on long-distance services wherever possible, in preference to 350/2s - they have a low-density 2+2 seating layout...

Stock transfers you would like to see

In which case they might end up going on ex-London services, with 350/2s cascaded onto the West Midlands local routes. Then again, the capacity might be more required in London - I believe a 4-car 350/1 only has 184 or so seats, compared to 284 in a 3-car 323. Oh, and thanks for confirming by...

Stock transfers you would like to see

As far as I know, they won't be using any 350/3s on the Cross City Line in ordinary service - I don't imagine they'll be comptible with 323s, and they'd prefer to keep the whole service run by the same type of train, so they can 6-car and whatever when they need to. I can't actually remember...

Stock transfers you would like to see

I think that was taken as two of the 350/3s will replace 323s (say on the Walsall - Birmingham - Wolverhampton circuit), which will go onto the Cross City Line so it's able to run 3tph to both Bromsgrove and Redditch (with electrification down the Lickey and a new passing loop at Alvechurch). No...

    Night buses

I'd say a 6N, 9N, 22N, 37N, 45N, 51N, 60N, 61N, 75N, 87N, 97N, 104N and 126N would make sense, even if only hourly on Friday and Saturday nights. But I guess there isn't really an incentive for anyone to provide them - the buses used would likely be very dirty if not damaged by the time they...

    175s on Birmingham services

Unfortunately to see them in Birmingham during the week or on Saturdays would be very rare indeed - almost every service that arrives from Holyhead departs as a service for the Cambrian Line, which is trialling ERTMS and as such can only be run using Class 158s (or Class 97 locomotives), and...

    Ambiguous annotations in timetables

Tradition, more than anything really. The Merchant Venturer is perhaps not the greatest example, but for example the 1006 Paddington to Penzance is known as 'The Cornish Riviera Express' - there has been a 1000-ish departure from Paddington known as this since 1904. Though I see your point...

    Ambiguous annotations in timetables

Generally the notes at column headers are formatted with a space in between if two notes apply (e.g. A E) or with no space if it is a single, double-lettered note (e.g. AE). In terms of the ones with the times themselves, normally only one note applies, so assume double lettered if there are two...

    Advice on Reservations

Thanks, it looks like that might be the best bet. Would that definitely be free? The NRT states that First Great Western charge £5 for seat reservations made after booking a ticket - or is that just at their stations?
