    Articulated buses in Malta

Just came across this photo in my collection from 2012. From the time that Arriva operated articulated buses here in Malta. What is interesting is that whilst they were repainted ( several even remained Red) the interior adverts were not removed and several even retained London rear and side...

    Last Freight on the IOW?

The Isle Wight is often discussed here particularly with reference to the Ex LT stock used. Got me wondering when was the last freight service on IOW. Must be pre electrification as once electrified the only loco was the 05 and that was for departmental use.

Last PEP derived units in service

With the 314's gone, 313/0's gone, 315's being rundown and the 507 and 508's demise soon, got me thinking the 313/2's could ( I said could) be the last full PEP derived units in service and possibly 313.201 whilst being the 1st of the 313's could potentially be the last to withdrawn. Before...

Trivia: Locos with different cabs at each end

Following on from my prev thread. Discovering 25.006 had a cab from a later 25 fitted got me wondering what other locos had different cabs at either end? to start there was a 44 which had a headcode fitted cab at one end, also I believe there was at least 1 31 with skinhead 1 end and head code...

Cabbing (getting into train cabs) in the 1970s

Reading posts got me thinking of "the good old days". Two of my best ever 'cabs' were when I asked the driver of 25235 at Glasgow Queen Street if I could could cab the loco; it was the 08:35 to Oban (normally a Class 27). I ended up travelling all the way to Oban in the cab, hiding in the...

    Loddeka FSF new front

Been doing soma digging and whilst the FSF was discontinued in 1962 have found many pictures of FLF’s and FS’s delivered in 62 with the new fronts but never seen a picture of an FSF with new front. I believe the grills were inter changeable so wondering if any FSF were delivered with the new...

    Push pull loco's turning.

Just wondering if under Virgin days and Anglia were 86,s , 87,s and 90 turned regularly so each cab was used or were they always left facing the same way, effectively leave 1 cab always unused

    Least successful production chassis

Wondering what was the least successful production chasis. For my mind it would be close between the Guy Wulfarian and the Daimler Roadliner. Both models went into production but neither survived long in service, Wullfarians being replaced by older Loddeka LD's.

Locos and units you didnt like and still dont miss

Plenty of threads on what we like and miss but how about the opposite. Loco's and units we didnt like when in service and still don't miss years after withdrawl. For me diesel loco wise 25's, they were fine reliable work horses and did what they were asked to do but never got excited about them...

    Bus with Shortest working lives

We all know of the Wullfarians and their short working lives. But was wondering of others , both single vehicles and classes ( excluding demonstrators) . For example Eastern Scottish had several Leylands which were sold or transferred to other operators after 1year

Buses lasting longest with 1st Owner

Wondering If we exclude London Transport , which company has bought a vehicle new and operated it for the longest period in public service. I would exclude vehicles retained for exhibition etc .

'PEP' derived stock: unloved workhorses, missed when withdrawn

In years to come we will lament the demise of the PEP derived stock. Never really loved by enthusiasts when in service but good reliable workhorses, that did the job they were designed for magnificently. Very much like the SUBs and EPBs. Taken for granted in service by enthusiasts, then much...

One Man Operation on Half-cab Double Deckers

Remember getting on Lodeka of Eastern Scottish which had fare collection equipment but was crew operated. Now I know quite a few operators converted half cabs for OMO operation. Some like Aberdeen who converted rear entrance Daimlers to front entrance and Nothern Gerneral who rebuilt a...

    Hindsight Glasgow

There were plans to replace Queen St and Buchanan St with a new Station called Glasgow North , also replace Central and St Enoch Station with a New Station Glasgow south. Neither were followed through. However imagine that we had these today how many problems would Have been readily resolved...

    BR’s most successful DMU?

Ok this could be a controversial one, but what do you think was BR’s most successful DMU? I am going to put myself on the firing range by suggesting the 143s. After initial problems they settled down to work all types of services. Hated by passengers and the media , they were reliable and...

    Tank engines on express workings

Saw some pictures recently of tanks piloting tender locos out on Glasgow Central on express services and got me thinking ( yes the grey cells still work) were there any express services during BR days scheduled for tank engines. I am not thinking of splitting trains where a tank may have done...

Trivia, 1st 100% (OMO) OPO Major operator in UK

Wondering who was the 1st Major operator to be 100% (OMO) OPO in the UK , excluding small independents. I know many large municipals planned it in the 60's but not sure if any actually managed it due to the extra vehicles needed and the unreliability of many vehicles of the time. The SBG even...

    2nd Hand Unrepainted buses

Remeber back in mid 70's when Eastern Scottish were experiencing a major bus shortage they acquired ex Central Lodekka FS's and put them straight into service still in Maroon and cream Livery, several went to Bathgate and were used on the 35 service which caused confusion when they entered the...

    Junction Names

Looking at some junction names got me wondering how they got their names. The one that got me thinking was " Polkemmet Junction just to the West of Bathgate by Whiteside. I remember this junction in its last days, what is strange as how it got its name, the line went to Fauldhouse, where there...
