There was an incident in the Winsford area and two freight trains were stationary on the two track section, blocking both the up and down. The sleeper was held at Crewe and was in a position to divert via Manchester, however the driver didn't have the route knowledge, so it was stayed at Crewe...

Checking RTT for other days, looks like it is a regular thing at that time.
I saw one live on RailCam at Crewe several months ago, someone running across the WCML than up the Chester line until they were caught by BTP. I was surprised the cams weren't taken offline.
Salisbury to Exeter St. Davids (calling at Honiton) seems to be on a hourly schedule. The problem with the line, not allowing through trains from Waterloo, is the other side of Salisbury.
There are two sorts of machines at Basingstoke, the smaller ones to the left as you walk in always gave me issues at barriers, especially Underground ones. The ones to the right hand side seemed to produce tickets that worked better.
