IET class 801 Paddington - Taunton: when does the switch to diesel power actually begin?

I beleive the wires end just past Newbury so I think that is correct.

Celebrities you have met and admired and celebrities that you wish you hadn't met

I met Price Andrew at work. He came to our company with something to do with the Queen’s award for export. I wasn’t really interested and was happy to carry on working in my office, however my boss asked me nicely if I would join everyone when he arrived so reluctantly I did. Stood in line with...

Celebrities you have met and admired and celebrities that you wish you hadn't met

I have been a television broadcast engineer for going on 20 years. Therefore you’d think I’d have a celebrity autograph book the size of a phone directory! Not so ;) Normally my work is done before any “talent” arrives at a studio or OB. Or I’m so busy trying to get something on air (or keep...

Suggestions for solving Dawlish problem: electrification or new route?

I too hate the place. My mother knows that bloke who owns it. His Brexit stance gets all the local gammons fired up while they buy his overpriced tat. As someone well traveled and pro EU it all makes me cringe. As a side note. When a lad, I used to work at the now defunct Gorse Blossom...

Suggestions for solving Dawlish problem: electrification or new route?

I’d say pretty important. The Torbay area is the largest conurbation in Devon outside of Exeter or Plymouth. Plus it’s a tourist destination. Hence why opening the Okehampton route as a sea wall diversion is the incorrect option in my opinion.

Trago Mills for example. Weird place.

Suggestions for solving Dawlish problem: electrification or new route?

As an ex local from this area I agree. The A30 dissects the route at the Exeter end, the Teign valley is prone to flooding and narrow in places. Then the A38 is built over much of the track towards the Heathfield end. You would need a sharp left hand bend to join the current disused Heathfield...

Suggestions for solving Dawlish problem: electrification or new route?

Well that’s starts to open up a few hypothesis ! You could suggest if WWII never happened and the line was built that there might never have been nationalisation and then maybe there might not have been the same Beeching cuts. But if we assume there were, would they not keep the inland...

Suggestions for solving Dawlish problem: electrification or new route?

Blame Hitler.... The GWR were ready to build an inland route from Exminster via Haldon to near Newton abbot. They had even bought all the land and some wooden pegs to mark out the route.. Then WWII broke out and it was cancelled........ I believe BR then sold off all the land at a later date.

Why do people view the UK as being worse than other countries in certain areas when it isn't?

We are world leaders in litter, fly tipping, football violence, obesity and after a spell in the lower leagues racism and bigotry is coming back to the fore. Oh and the class system and hanging on to the past……;)

My Ideas for 3rd Rail Expansion

Yes If we took say a 4MW loco @ 25KV that’s 160A current 4MW @ 750V = 5333A o_O So a much higher current draw on 3rd rail, the issue with current it generates heat, which wastes energy. Hence why the national grid uses 250KV for the main power distribution network. Note: I am not an expert...

Dominic Cummings alleged breach of lockdown rules discussion

Here is the problem. Does not matter if you are left or right or indifferent. Cummins was in the public eye and connected with the government who issued rules and guidelines. He bent/broke those rules. I was just listing to the radio and people are angry as they made sacrifices and gone...

TRIVIA: Britain's most underrated visitor destinations

Agreed, I have worked in the Saffron Walden area for years and most of Essex is very charming, especially north of the A12. Ive spent many an afternoon exploring on my motorcycle. A lot of Suffolk and south Cambs is also rather nice.
