Male violence against women in the UK

Backontrack. Your post is outstanding and the best I have seen across various forums. Thank you for taking the time to write this. I have a daughter and I’m in a predominantly female family and I’m sick of all this toxic masculinity that’s prevalent in our society. The Met Police behaviour was...

Can I take a motorcycle on a train?

Same bikes these days. Just different colours :D;)

Can I take a motorcycle on a train?

No such thing as bad weather only bad kit. I’ve toured on a motorcycle for years across UK and Europe. I have a decent Goretex style bike suit, the bike has a screen and nice big tank to deflect the elements, plus heated grips. I’ve ridden in some dire weather and turned up toasty and dry...

Covid-19 to have a permanent downward effect on commuting patterns with more partial working from home?

Interesting thread. I was actually working from home a couple of days a week before Covid. However now I have a work from home contract and our company has closed many offices around the world. We still have a lab I can visit (I’m a broadcast engineer) but I might only go in once a week when I...

Can I take a motorcycle on a train?

There is a Youtube vid where they compared an eMTB restricted and de-restricted on the same trail circuit. There was no real benefit and not worth doing. It would only be of use to make you faster on the road.

Can I take a motorcycle on a train?

Interesting side point, you can "derestrict” an ebike by fooling the speed sensor into thinking it never gets to 25km/h. This doesn’t give you anymore watts but means the pedal assist keeps going until you reach the limit of the bike’s gearing and your leg movement. This is illegal (unless on...

Can I take a motorcycle on a train?

I have a BMW GS 1200, I think that has enough torque to pull a train

Cyclists - your experiences on the road

I have been a keen mountain biker trail cyclist for years. My aim on a day out is to actually avoid as many tarmac roads as possible and only use bridalways, byways and single tracks. I do have a road bike for the occasional commute on the train to London but that hasn’t seen much use lately!

Do you have any model railway projects on the go?

Just for fun. Looked online and a 25 yard pack of N Gauge track is £70. Therefore to double track the above would come in around £7700 ! That’s without any turnouts loops or sidings included

Do you have any model railway projects on the go?

Fag packet calculation. Exeter to Penzance is about 120 miles. N Gauge is 1:148 So I make that 0.81 of a mile !

Proposals to reopen Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton

In engineering often if something looks right it is right. I've always felt Meldon viaduct looks ugly and fragile. However to the main point. As I understand it, the viaduct was already weak by the 1960's and the line over it singled. When the route was cut back it remained as a head shunt for...

Will you get drug tested for an admin position at an engineering firm?

If you do get the job. Let’s hope there is a well stocked vending machine for snacks at work ;)

Proposals to reopen Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton

And yet again the giant Elephant in the room (or Meldon Viaduct as its known) seems to get underestimated as a blocker to this project. That and as a diversion route would mean two reversals for a Paddington to Penzance train. Open to Okehampton, Open to Tavistock if you must. Leave the middle...

As a Broadcast Engineer, those of you without a TV are not putting food on my table for my family......... shame on you ;)

GWR 802s to Plymouth - Where do they switch from Electric to Diesel?

Interesting thread. I’m curious (if anyone knows) how it’s electrically changed over. At some point (say approaching NBY on the down line) it will have the panto up and the engines started, therefore you have two sources of power to the traction motors. Is that changeover automatically...

    What was your first trainset/locomotive?

I had a Lima freight set with a class 09 and some wagons, including a dual deck car carrier in Motorrail livery!! Soon after I bought a 2 tone green Class 47 and a BR 7MT Britannia, followed by a pannier tank.
