The French don’t build their high speeds lines to 300kph and haven’t for decades. LGV Est for example, the first phase of which is almost 20 years old, operates at 320kph and was designed for 350kph.
So you according to the map you posted in post 7 the High Speed spine line should be London-Leicester-Sheffield-Manchester (via Barnsley)-Liverpool. It still crosses a chunk of the Peak District National Park!
(Image shows the suggested Leicester-Sheffield-Barnsley-Manchester-Liverpool route...
How are you doing Sheffield-Manchester then? Going around or going underneath?
(Image is a cropped version of the OP, highlighting with red how the proposed high speed line runs London-Leicester-Sheffield-Manchester-Liverpool).
Here’s the route with the national park:

There are many things on this map that make me smile but given how much folk complain about putting a line across the Chilterns this is proposing putting one across the UK’s first National Park!
In modern accounting terms it’s still part of the total cost of the project. Hence my query about whether they even included the cost of the car park at Winnersh in 1986.
But I haven’t even got onto the four public consultations, the electricity substation (+ costs of getting a new grid connection), the EV charging, the (safety) lighting, the landscaping and greenspace design!
But as I say that’s not the only cost associated with car park. There’s also stuff like the archaeological works which I can guarantee were completed at standard prices, not railway prices whatever that means. In 1986 it would have all just got buldozed or, if the construction workers happened...
Only if it has no flood mitigation. At Thanet there are three balancing ponds (one on each side not adjacent to the railway) to deal with the water, and there will be a network of drains under the car park. This wouldn’t have happened in 1986.
The Winnersh Triangle car park (if it was even included in the station price) wouldn’t have have anywhere near as much flood water mitigation strategies as Thanet Parkway, the price of which definitely included the car park and flood water mitigation. Winnersh probably also included zero...
No but governments in this country reacted to the growth in nimbyism since the 1980s with indecision and uncertainty about what is the governments long term policy is, and how the goverment plans to balance national and local issues. This means project developers have to be extremely...
Completely hypothetically as the crow flies a Newcastle to Edinburgh (91 miles) to Glasgow (133 miles) line is about 133 miles total construction. A hypothetical line Newcastle-West Linton-Edinburgh (102 miles) and Newcastle-West Linton-Glasgow (122 miles) is 137 miles in total (for...
Not surprised to hear this in the slightest sadly.
What I think you fail to appreciate is that you (and everyone) live in a bubble. It’s why you’ve pulled a figure of 95% out of thin air. For you your anti HS2 views are constantly being reinforced by those around you and you reinforce their...
Phase 2b Crewe to Manchester is still progressing (albeit extremely slowly) through parliament under the guise of NPR!
Did I say 95% of the population are nimbys?
But they do form an extremely vocal minority that we let cost the country extreme amounts of money every year, and they do exist...
Thank you for this. I do hope you’re not too depressed by what you’re reading.
Something that nimbys will never, ever consider because they are completely blinded by their own views and opinions.
When did HS2 emphasise hypothetical phases 3 and 4 to Newcastle/Edinburgh/Glasgow? Phase 2 had Royal Assent and was progressing steadily (and would be in construction now) until Rishi took to an entirely political decision at the Tory party conference to cancel it.
You are making the exact opposite complaint to the one CMS1 is making. They are arguing that HS2 is an example of a project failing to plan strategically while you are saying they just need to plan one phase at a time and not consider what happens later. Personally as a regular user of the M4 in...
