From the scope of the Tender documentation: My bold. Heidi Alexander had already announced that land purchased for the eastern leg would be sold so that is not a surprise. I have yet to see any evidence (and certainly nothing that that AlexSJW has claimed appears to have any real sources) land...

Assuming this is in response to my previous post non of the reports or claims appear to exist using a Google search. Do you have any direct links?

Do you have a source that 90% has been purchased? A written question to parliament (UIN HL8410, tabled on 12 June 2025) asking how much land had been compulsory purchased for Phase 1+2a was 54km. The High Speed Rail Group say that 11.7km had been purchased for Phase 2a by November 2023...

Are you saying that London to Crewe will take less than 40 minutes? Because even using West Midlands Trains services only take 40 minutes.

I have nothing against Stoke, and as I’ve previously said on a personal level I don’t even really like Manchester. However, there is no point in building a new network if you’re going to stop at every small or medium sized town or city that happens to be nearby. If we want a modal shift to...

    Restarting HS2a

You can keep saying that this is a long route however much you like but it doesn’t make it any more a valid point. It’s meaningless as anyone who can use a map can see. Have you even looked at a map? How much does it actually add in terms of distance? Avoiding stopping at Stoke strikes me as a...

    Restarting HS2a

You keep saying this is a long route but I don’t think you have a good sense of geography. Look at a map. This is one showing the existing routes. London to Manchester via Phase 2a is only going to be marginally longer than via Stoke, Macclesfield and Poynton due to the windy nature of this 19th...

No. You have quoted a report which is claiming a figure for London to Camden only, at the exclusion of other journeys.

Hard data is never ‘hard data’ when it comes from an unreliable source. I suggest you listen to More or Less to get an understanding of how data can be manipulated by bias or to give a predetermined answer. In this case the bias or aims of the unknown funder of the report and/or the amateur...

    Restarting HS2a

That document is written by a journalist, not a transport planner, on behalf of a conservative think tank that is rated by Open Democracy as one of the least transparent think tanks in the country (rated the lowest grade E if anyone is interested). In the documents acknowledgment it states...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

I love that you think this. But sadly it doesn’t make it true. There is zero chance it would be cheaper than crossing the Chilterns, and it would be vastly more controversial.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Vastly expensive and tunnelling would still require above ground works. Nothing is ever insurmountable, but it’s only surmountable at vast expense and in this case vast controversy (think Chilterns dialled up to 11) if you build a delta junction on the suggested location. While CMS is proposing...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

There’s absolutely no reason for it to be part of the UK high speed network, which is why NPR never proposed it and went to Leeds instead. Sheffield-Manchester needs to be part of a really good regional network, which is what NPR hopefully can deliver.

Yep, it’s less than a third of the length of Birmingham-Manchester!

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

But that doesn’t solve the issue that it fails connect the second and third largest markets together. I could make exactly the same argument about making speed upgrades to Sheffield-Manchester as you do about Birmingham-Manchester. It also doesn’t connect the West Midlands (second/third largest...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Except HS2 Y did serve East Midlands Parkway! I just didn’t include it because it was already so far down the list of large urban areas. Giving exceptionally rapid journey times between West Midlands-East Midlands-West Riding and West Midlands-Greater Manchester. Birmingham to Leeds would be 1...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

With no disrespect to those towns and cities so what? Sheffield is the 6th biggest English urban area, Leicester is 11, Nottingham 14, Hull 20, Derby 22, Donny (much as I love it) 54. HS2 Y did London (1) to Birmingham (2), Manchester (3), Liverpool (4), Leeds (5) and Sheffield (6), as well as...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

If it was a motorway I would agree with you, but as a Manchester-Sheffield railway not really. It would be an awful big mess for decades. It would make operating the hospital very interesting too…

Again, if folk thought crossing the Chilterns AONB was hard, the UK’s first National Park says hello. And that design still either crosses the Chiltern AONB or goes through the middle of Luton.
