Hello, I had this experience on Thursday evening, and I’m wondering what opinions people have.
I had an itinerary from Southampton Central to Hartford. Generated by the retailer, observing the minimum connection times (just!)
1/8.
Departing Southampton Central at 17:30, arriving London...
My train ended up delayed over an hour, caught up in this. Apparently the driver could not proceed at points because the rails were submerged, and we had to wait for water to drain away.
Is this because it's a third-rail system? I remember being on a Pendolino near Carlisle a few years ago, and...
Everything is obviously fine now, as the ORR are saying Network Rail have complied with their improvement notice.

Bit of an interesting time at Soton Central this morning. 0800 to Waterloo not running. Announcements by the platform staff “don’t board the 0815, it’s very busy and you’ll have to change at Reading. Wait for the delayed 0730 which is 2 mins away, it’s direct”.
0815 departs fairly busy. The...
It also appears to be one of the lines which the Class 195s don't grace. I understand it's down to some sort of gauging issue? However there is a video on Youtube of an out-of-service unit absolutely flying through Northwich, so I assume it fits well there!
The acceleration profile of the 195...
I suppose that’s the most important thing, I didn’t think of that. Interesting insight, thanks!
The supervisor in the office on P2 called control, and they confirmed the train was definitely meant to stop. The supervisor checked in case there was some disruption they weren’t aware of.
I’m currently sat at Basingstoke, feeling sorry for myself because my intended train (1817, 1W35 to Weymouth) has failed to stop. Sped right through. Most people taking it in good spirits though, especially the guard who was meant to be on it.
That got me thinking, do signals take a train’s...
Surely, evidence to the contrary is needed to be accused of foul play? Like, CCTV evidence of boarding at the station on your ticket, before your ticket was purchased.
Quite painful really. My fast Weymouth was cancelled, and the next one traveled via Twickenham. We had two drivers up top, one to drive and the other to guide on the route. Quite the trudge, slow progress, but better than no progress!
Doesn't have to be the whole platform though does it? I know at least Waterloo + City tube line has a 'hump' halfway down the platform for level access, probably lots of other tube stations too. Even Northwich National Rail has a hump.
NORTHWICH RAIL PASSENGERS GET THE HUMP
If Northwich...
The station has been completely overhauled, a lot of money has gone into the new entrance/gate line area. He's probably referring to that...if they were spending so much upgrading the station, maybe the platforms should have been looked at as well.
Time to put the optimistic hat on. Maybe LNER have lately been receiving/seeing a lot of feedback along the lines of "you're very expensive now", and this PR piece is some kind of way of countering that narrative.
I assume this is different to the text-to-speech system they've put in place at smaller stations like Greenbank?
"The next train to depart from platform 1. Is the 09.23. Northernserviceto. Manchester Pick."
I always thought it was better than nothing, but still not great.
Previously yes, but I don't think the regulation argument holds up much weight now, alas. Look at LNER getting rid of super-off peak fares on a whim. I doubt they would have got away with that as a fully-privatised TOC, but as they're being run by the government (pretty much), now anything goes.
Interestingly, the ORR issued 4 improvement notices in 2023. This includes the notice issued to Network Rail re: Euston management.
All notices, except one, are complied with. No prizes for guessing which one isn't! (and it had an extension too)...
Assuming that's true, that's absolutely shocking behaviour from the station operator. There's no way my parents would be able to make it from concourse to train in that time, especially with everyone running around them.
I believe that's happening now at Paddington Elizabeth Line. When I've been there recently, there's been one member of staff stood in the wide gate scanning e-tickets.
Does/can the third rail provide some mitigation against derailment, keeping the train relatively straight? It looks like the wheel has tucked in between the rails.
I think in some places you can tell that some thought has gone into avoiding this issue. For example, arriving into Hartford, the auto announcement goes off immediately after passing the points after Acton Bridge. So only when there's no more chance of a late-running Avanti holding it up...
We are aware of an issue with emails from the Forum to Microsoft-based email accounts (hotmail/outlook/live.com email addresses). This is being looked into currently, thanks for your patience meanwhile.
