Presumably pollution as well as brake dust from trains and weathering etc is to blame. There are some very dirty looking OHLE structures in and around Bletchley and in the north London area on the WCML.

Coventry & Rugby, while functional, if a little dull are normally kept spotless. Standing on the island platform at Rugby post-Christmas on a Thursday mid-afternoon, the place was very quiet indeed, but no litter or debris was to be seen.
