    Northern Ireland Brexit Trade Deal

Politicians really should take the time to read the details of agreements, protocols, green papers, white papers etc before committing to support what is in them. Details matter, especially when dealing with the EU who have been shown to be masters at crafting the finer details.....

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

The charge points are already an issue, perhaps not the SuperTelsa jobs but I run about 10 of the lower powered commercial units (well known brand) at work and already I'm having to have the firmware upgraded because newer models can't connect to them. The VW ID4 was one that had problems.

What was the worst car you ever owned.

I had a 1987 blue Ford Orion 1.4 which was awful to drive and the exhaust fell off in the middle of rural Ireland. Lots of minor niggles and eventually traded it in for a Mondeo. I did get it cheap though. It replaced a run of three Opel Mantas, 1.8GT, 1.8GTJ and a 2.0GTE. All three were rust...

First car : lease or buy?

I paid £500 in 1987 for a 1975 Vauxhall Chevette with 20000 miles on it. Insurance was £500 for TPFT. Cheap motoring, got all my minor bumps and dings out of the way in it and sold in for the same price I bought it for a year later. I wouldn't have a new car as a first car.

£1.38.9 for unleaded this morning and £1.61.9 for diesel. Local garage in Frodsham.

Lockdown effects now killing/harming more people than Covid

Also how do you 'tax the rich'? The real rich don't have incomes to tax, they have assets and take dividends or value out of them for day to day living. How can you tax assets without hammering ordinary people? You can't because those same assets sit in our pension funds or we live in them or...

Lines That Were closed due to Accidents or Vandalism

The line between West Cheshire Junction and Mouldsworth closed down after the signalbox at WCJ burnt down, though I suspect the line would have closed anyway due to the lack of traffic.

Merseyrail 777 battery provision could see many extensions to the Merseyrail network?

It would appear that the great and the good don't want it, despite the local MP and Council being in favour...https://www.cheshire-live.co.uk/news/chester-cheshire-news/government-rejects-funding-bid-merseyrail-24767768

    Class 175 future speculation

The rather excellent North Wales Coast railway website has this interesting paragraph on this weeks notice board.... Out of the blue (thanks to Eryl Crump for spotting it) comes a new open-access railway company, based in Rhyl: Clwydian Railways, proposing to lease Class 175 units and run...

When did metric start to be taught in British schools?

I was taught metric from 1974 until 1986 then joined ICI and went imperial until I left in 2001. I believe the petrochemical industry is still heavily imperial.

How much of a general decline in parliamentary standards are we experiencing?

If the Conservatives win the next election then in all honesty the fault lies with the Opposition parties and especially Labour. This Govt is probably the worse in my living memory (I just about remember Heath) and a decent, Centre Left, traditional Labour party should be wiping the floor with...

    Stations With Largest Step Down.

Helsby platform 1. There is a hump on it now but only covers one set of doors so if you are towards the end of the train it's a fair drop.

Keir Starmer and the Labour Party

If you believe that the current Conservatives are hard-right then I'm sorry, you are deluded. They are liberals in the traditional sense, centre left. They have a liberal/wet leader and are very metropolitan in outlook. On things like immigration they talk hard but play very soft for example...

    World’s best airport

In my experience both of the best airports I have travelled to/from were in Scotland, Sumburgh and Inverness. Both highly pleasant to use, no crowds, no delays and very swift security. In contrast most of the large airports in the world and awful places to have to deal with.
