At present, most steam hauled trains heading to Cardiff from the east, ‘flip around’ at the triangular junction east of Newport in order that the steam loco will be at the front for the return to England. Cardiff West Junction (near the Canton depot) is going to be modified in order to take an...
Transport for Wales are holding consultations regarding bus reform in north Wales. Details below:>

With Global Warming increasing the likelihood of heatwaves and droughts, surely it is high time that the UK Government authorised the roll out of more lines being electrified?
Currently, we have a situation where trains that can run on electricity - such as the Hitachi 800 series - are running...
I have just been looking at Train Company reviews on Trustpilot. Good to see Transport for Wales scoring very highly for consumer satisfaction - and the fact that they have staff responding to the reviews.
It looks to me like Cross Country rank lowest for consumer satisfaction based on the...
The best map that appeared on the National Rail website appears to have disappeared. Why can’t they have a simple route map with thicker lines denoting the major routes all the way down to thin lines for less used lines?
With the new direct GWR trains now operating between Swindon and Oxford, I really do wonder why the Cotswolds Discoverer Day Rover does not include the missing link between these 2 places?
It would be darn helpful - and induce more people to travel by train if the complete circuit could be made...

This is getting beyond a joke. Time to consider a new crossing but surely a bridge would be liable to salt spray?
I raised the issue of the deterioration of Barry Island station about 4 years ago. I revisited last weekend and sadly the deterioration has continued - although some remedial work is taking place on the canopy - presumably because it was starting to collapse? The GWR iron work continues to rust...
I read that Llandore viaduct is going to be closed for maintenance / track renewal meaning no trains in out of Swansea from the east. Why therefore is the Swansea District Line not being used to run direct services between Port Talbot and Llanelli and hence west Wales...
I see that over the next few days there is a Rail Sale.
Is it such a good idea to induce the public to purchase tickets for travel between 13 January and 25 March when nobody knows that far in advance what the weather will be like?
For example, tomorrow (8 January & Friday 9 January 2026)...
I have just done a check for a one way journey on Wednesday 7 January departing at 10am.
Depart Newport at 10.07 on a direct TFW service to Manchester (arrive 13.13) and the Advance fare is a whopping £54.40.
Depart Bristol (TM) at 10.00 on as direct Cross Country service to Manchester (arrive...
Yet another terrible day on the Cheltenham to Cardiff route - Monday 22 December, 2025. Many Cross Country cancellations & TFW running 2 coach trains - often old sprinters. This is just not good enough - especially with loads of people out and about for Christmas shopping.
I am aware that up to 2 children per fare paying adult can travel for free on TFW. I thought a recent announcement had been made that this applied to other companies that also operate on lines which have TFW services? However, I don't see any reference to this in the T&C now on the internet...
On the National Rail website for the Freedom of Severn & Solent Rover, under Validity is says ‘Valid in both directions” = NO. So, presumably they expect people to keep travelling in one direction in some sort of loop to get back to their starting place? That being so, how can people do that...
I have just been trying to use Trainline for the first time to test it out for a local journey using their app on my phone.
I could not find the option to add my plastic Railcard (which I got for half price via Tesco Clubcard vouchers). When I click Railcard on the Trainline app, rather than...
Looks like things are moving forward for the new transport interchange at Milford Haven station.

I see that a campaign has been launched to restore Caerleon station just north of Newport on The Marches Line.
Trying to get in or out of Caerleon by road is most awkward and the town could certainly do with a station - both for the locals and for making it easy for tourists to reached the...
I see that overcrowding is still an issue on the Ebbw Vale to Cardiff route. Of course, this line should have 4 car FLIRT trains but soldiers on with a mixture of 150’s with only 2 cars plus some 197’s - which really should be on the mainline.
The root cause of this issue is the delay in...
Today (Saturday 13 September 2025), the TFW journey check says there is a ‘good service’ on The Marches Line between Cardiff and Shrewsbury. However, this line is closed for engineering work and bus replacement is operating. I wonder how many people will set off thinking the service is good when...
We are aware of an issue with emails from the Forum to Microsoft-based email accounts (hotmail/outlook/live.com email addresses). This is being looked into currently, thanks for your patience meanwhile.
