Campaign To Restore Caerleon Station.

I see that a campaign has been launched to restore Caerleon station just north of Newport on The Marches Line.

Trying to get in or out of Caerleon by road is most awkward and the town could certainly do with a station - both for the locals and for making it easy for tourists to reached the Roman remains.

Definitely much needed and will attract a lot of users. The line is on a curve through the area though, is that an issue for new stations? I'm sure I've heard somewhere that new curved platforms are hard to get approval for.

Caerleon would certainly make sense when / if the the Abergavenny stopper services are introduced. The NR study of the Marches route linked on the website is a very interesting read. As it points out, the liminal nature of the route between the two countries has left the infrastructure pretty much ignored and unloved.

It's not so much that it needs a major upgrade, more that it needs a long-term programme of improvments to things like signalling, level crossings etc.

To be viable, a Caerleon station needs a large car park. This is liable to attract rather than reduce local traffic. Effects on more distant congestion (eg on the M4) will be minimal. If local people want a station without a car park, I suggest funding via a precept on the local council tax (subject to a local referendum).
