Comprehensive Spending Review - Wed 20 Oct - what's for the chop in our world ?

MML electrification? I don't see this going ahead in the next 10 years. Expect instead the bi-mode conversion of the 22x trains on MML, XC and VWC. Even given the short electrification length of the MML the addition of a regenerating transformer car makes this a good bet - on VWC diesel...

    Siemens for Eurostar

I'm so at a loss to see what good Alstom think that taking legal action will do. It just smacks of being "bad loosers". It will hardly get Eurostar to say "Oh, you're so right - we'll buy compliant trains from you instead". More like - "How dare you! We'll never do business with you again......."

    380 in Britain NOW!

Just to elaborate on the "failure" - the roof cover was actually part of the roof-mounted air-conditioning unit. Just in case anyone thought the roof structure of the body-shell was falling to bits!!

    Services That Really Should Exist...

BEFORE Sprinters and "Provincial", there was a very irregular service from Birmingham to Norwich and Cambridge - 2 or 3 to each, daily. There were huge gaps in the timetable! It was old DMUs most of the time, but loco hauled (Class 31) services through to Yarmouth in the summer Saturdays...

    Irish Fotopic update...

Nice pics, Joe!! LOve the Irish rail scene, just wish I'd travelled more over there. BTW, do you know what happened to the Mk.III coaches? Last I heard they were up for sale, a possibility they may have been acquired for UK loco haulage??

Airdrie - Bathgate Project Update Pics From Sat 24th July 2010

Nice set of pictures! Can't wait to ride the route in December.....

Days gone by at Guide Bridge.

Woodhead route closed because - at the time - there was spare trans-pennine capacity and rail freight was in nose-dive. A "conspiracy theory" at the time was that the route (and tunnels??) could be used by the M67 extension from Manchester to the M1 at Sheffield/Barnsley. In the end the...

    Scotrail Class 380s

I think the jury's out on the corridor connection. Transport for Scotland insisted on them; ScotRail don't like them (they were removed from 318s!!). They are an added complication and due to their sloping design I can only envisage them being unreliable:-(( TIME WILL TELL!!

    Services That Really Should Exist...

No hope in reconstructing the line in South Nottingham - its been built over and the bridge over the TRent replaced by a road! Could just run via the Systen north curve and serve Loughborough and/or East Midlands Parkway??. Much better would be a London St Pancras to Glasgow service via...

I think that's only on the Birmingham - Edinburgh trains, to release more Voyagers for North Wales trains?? There are more spare Peno's at the weekend....

    South Eastern class 395s

Actually, I was on that train! Unofficially we clocked 162.4 mph in the leading (DVT) cab. Formation was DVT, three mkIVs and Class 91 pushing. We had three goes Grantham to Peterborough under total route occupation 06:00 to 09:00 on a Sunday morning. We couldn't get top speed on the first...

    ScotRail repaint countdown

Hi, Class 334's will get the new Saltaire livery under a C6 overhaul currently out to tender. I don't think this overhaul will start before the end of 2010. It includes some refresh inside the saloons and a few technical upgrades. Of course, this assumes FSR are allowed to spend the money!!

    airdrie bathgate link

Hi, I believe that all Airdrie to Bathgate and Edinburgh trains will be diagrammed for Class 334's. But this is dependant on Class 380's being available to release them from Ayrshire Coast diagrams. Class 380's will replace the 322's on Edinburgh to North Berwick services, 322's are then...

    Old Railway Transparency Scans

I had come to the same conclusion! Note the train on the furthest viaduct, it's a Tunstead area to Northwich area (ICI) Limestone train in the old bogie hoppers used until the 1980's....

    British Rail Classification Numbers....

508s were built as 4-car units with movement to MerseyRail as 3-car units in mind at the time. Hence they were not 4xx series units. They were only "loaned" to the Southern Region as a "stop-gap" to replace aged 4-SUB units until sufficient Class 455's were delivered. The extra coach was...

    Trip to Glasgow

Hi! can't comment on where locomotives are kept at Mossend, but the Whifflet trains depart from the low numbered platforms at Central Main Station (High Level). They are Class 156's. Back in Glasgow myself next week, playing with Class 334's at Shields Depot. Work is going on already towards...
