    GWR South-West England

Note that classes 800 and 802, although different when delivered, now have almost the same spec. This means that they are now fully interchangable. 802s go to Swansea and 800s go to Penzance.

They make a Slim Jim look positively portly.

Trivia: shortest path to reverse a train from a terminus platform

It did used to have a service that ceased on 09/05/1986. It was supposed to reopen as part of the Henbury loop project, but this has been cut back to Henbury (from Filton direction) instead of being a complete loop.

    Northern: Sheffield to Bridlington

Last time I was up there the Sheffield Brid/Scarborough services were pretty solid 170s. BUT quite a few Scarboroughs were cancelled beyond Hull. I stayed in Scarborough for a week and the 09:01 off there didn't run once all the time I was there. ps I see it's cancelled today.

    Accommodation suggestions and reviews

Ash House Farm at Acton Bridge. I stayed here for 3 nights in April 2025. I had a big room which had a microwave and a fridge. Real milk provided to go with the tea/coffee which is so much better than those UHT things that you normally get. Breakfast was generous and very good, they keep their...

Line names that are no longer used.

Down my way many years ago there was the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Railway. I'll leave it to you to guess what that was called. ps I can't believe how many people haven't heard of the Desert and the Mule. I'm 66 years old and have never called them anything else, so the names must have...

    Politics of new trains

There ARE lots of new(ish) trains sat around in sidings doing nothing. There are the ex TPX Mk5a sets, there are an absolute shedload of 701s not in service yet - there are 90 sets in total and fewer than 10 in service at any one time. Then there's the 730s, none of the 5 car sets are in...

    Class 175s to GWR

Yes it does. The two vehicles will have different exam regimes, causing maintenance problems for scheduling exams. An example of this was the FGW 150/9s where the centre cars had to keep being moved between units when the 150/2 car required an exam when the 150/1 around it didn't.

    Class 175s to GWR

There are already several misformed units. The damaged parts of 008 and 101 are already paired up (as 175008) so that is likely to be the unit not reentering service.

Manchester - York via Wakefield...a bumpy ride?

At typical commute times, would a trolley be able to make it through the train? On my occasional visits up there peak time trains are full and standing, especially single 185s.

Ticket barriers at Wigan North Western

They were there the last time I did the walk from Central to BQ. I looked it up and that was 2011 - where does the time go?

Ticket barriers at Wigan North Western

Those barriers used to cause massive queues on a Friday night with all the people heading to the clubs.

How much does it cost to run a train?

GNER don't sell return tickets anymore. You have to buy seperate tickets for each direction.
