Regarding filling in the travel diary, some countries are more keen on it being filled in than others (Slovenia and Croatia spring to mind) but more conductors generally seem to be expecting it to be filled in than a few years ago; perhaps there has been a move towards making on-train staff more...

Could do worse than check out the Ibis budget at Zürich City West Tram no.4 stops right outside the door or Hardbrücke station (numerous S bahn services) a short walk away. There is an Ibis and Novotel in the same block if you want something a bit more upmarket as well.
