I do think the restricted width of the corridor makes the seating arrangement strange. Sure, it wasn't designed for what Southern use them for, but these units can be a pain to move through when fully loaded.
I also sympathise with anyone who ends up in the middle of a 3 seater!
From my experience with these units, the walkway is far too narrow because of the seating layout. If they were used solely on metro services, it wouldn't be too much of an issue, but they often end up in the common pool and are regularly found on long-distance commuter diagrams. The layout in...
You do also get the ironing board seating in the units I mentioned. The photo below shows one of the high density 377/1s, with the strange seating layout.
Connex ordered the first batch of 377s (377 101-139) and it's 377 120-139 with the type of seating you're referring to (with the exception of the more padded seating at the inner-ends of each coach, as well as first class). However, the ironing board seating also features in the two intermediate...
You do get the comfortable seating at the end of each coach in these units. Most of the time though they are already taken as, as you say, no one wants to sit on the ironing boards!
I think that'll just be encouragement to wear a face covering next winter, especially if we're still seeing the odd Covid case pop up. There will be no justification for anything as tough as we've had to endure.
In my place of work, we were told to remind people to wear a face covering if they weren't. If they said they were exempt, we didn't question it...because asking people to prove their disabilities in 2020 (and treating them as criminals if they can't) is absurd.
What a country we've become. As others have pointed out, a lot of reasons for not being able to wear a mask are not obvious. You're essentially congratulating the Police for fining people for hidden disabilities.
This is why so many can't wait to see the back of masks. They cause nothing but...
A landslip between Horsham and Dorking has resulted in the line being closed until at least 2 January, according to GTR.
Southern have also experienced other issues caused by the storm, including:
- fallen trees at Cooden Beach, Ore and between Horsham and Three Bridges;
- level crossing...
I have heard that sound on 377s many times in the past and have always wondered what the cause is. I feel like it probably is something to do with the traction motor/gearbox, as you say.
Ah I did wonder what those paths were for. I can't recall them being used either.
They've certainly needed this spare unit recently, with multiple unit faults down here! There's normally at least one unit swap every couple of days!
With the current timetable, I think they keep an additional unit spare at St Leonards Depot, so at any one time there will be four 4 car 171s on the East Coastway.
The Victoria - Eastbourne's were well-used prior to Covid and I'm sure will be again once we return to pre-virus normality. I'm not sure if doing this would go down well.
One option would be to split & attach at Lewes, with one portion going to/coming from Eastbourne and the other Seaford...
This is the diagram for 313220's move from Worthing to Lovers Walk - https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/75022/2020-11-21/detailed. The journey is planned to take 3 hours (departing WRH at 02:00 and arriving at Lovers at 05:00), so it's clear the unit (and the rescue unit) will be travelling...
