Running out of fuel was quite common on the trains of wood pulp from Sheerness? to Barrow in Furness in the early days of EWS.
A solution was eventually found. The traffic was taken off rail and transferred to coastal shiping.
Stock answer. It is always the man at the other end of the supply chain that has to make the first move towards rail. (With a few notable exceptions of course).
I recall that when this plant was first proposed a major suppler was to be Strathclyde Council, sending the waste by ROAD. Is this still the case and if so this would be a prime candidate for conversion to rail.
Beeston is owned by CRT and is kept in a warehouse near Ellesmere Port museum along with other old boats that they cannot repair due to lack of funds!
If you win, slip me a few quid and I will try and prise LINDA out of Malcolm Burge's hands for myself! :D:D:D
Such activity has always occurred. I have known "bashers" enter loco cabs and smash instruments so a preferred loco was the only one available for a particular service.
I owned SANDBACH for several years. The crimson lake livery which it carries is not original and I did consider repainting her in original grey and black for authenticity but decided against it.
SANDBACH is the only surviving steel LMS tug afloat, BEESTON being on the bank in a very poor...
The government has frozen road fuel duty yet again, but added a 12 month holiday to HGVs so they won't pay excise licences.
Has anyone heard of corresponding reliefs to railfreight? (I live in forlorn hope)
"Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed the government will extend the temporary 5p...
I bow to your knowledge of the "knackered" state of the line.
My use of the terminology "freight only" was obviously wrong but the sentiment remains. There are no scheduled passenger trains so maintenance of the line can be kept to a minimum allowing only 25mph for the (freight) trains that...
I have no idea why the line speed is 25mph but this could simply be reduced maintenance on a currently freight only line to save money.
A round of tamping could improve line speed without the need for extensive relaying.
1. I would need to go back a good few years to find the original PDNP documents but it was there. Time and money spent on the Monsal Trail changed their views. Yes they are not the ultimate transport authority but their views carry weight.
2. Further confirmation that the Peak is groaning...
Thanks for the confirmation that cycles arrive in the Peak Park on top of cars rather than by train, which would be more easily achieved from a railway down the Wye Valley.
The original intention of the Monsal Trail was to preserve the alignment of the railway for future reuse. Since then, the Peak District National Park authority have changed their position to support retaining the cycle path at the expense of a reopened railway.
In doing so they support the...
You get a better impression looking at RTT for Peak Forest sb. Given that all trains have to head north before turning east or west at Chinley, it is no surprise that many are ultimately for the north but a considerable tonnage ultimately turns south and heads for the West Midlands, East Anglia...
You took the entire cost of the railway and divided it between the number of freight trains to arrive at a figure per freight train.
That is exactly what you did.
That depends on the level of signalling specified. I have seen busy class 1 railroads in the USA with hand points on the mainline. You will also notice that in response to an attempt to load full costing onto a freight only railway I immediately reduced it to a required single line, removing...
