The way I read it is that you don't have to get a direct train, you can connect somewhere as long as it's in the correct direction. So for instance you could connect at Rugby on to the Euston trent Valley fast train rather than going via Northampton. Just the way I read it.

On the 6.55 from Tutbury and Hatton or the 7.56 the official connection is met with only a 10 min wait so not always an hour wait. You only need to be held outside Stoke for a late running cross country for you to miss the connection at Crewe.
