I'd have to agree with mparsonz. A train journey through to Beijing, or Hong Kong, from Britain (I'm assuming that's where you are), would definitely be something to consider. If I weren't planning to visit the States next year, I'd have done Manchester to Hong Kong instead.

Nice idea, but a limited market. GE and EMD can do that, in North America, simply due to the size of North American railroad companies. When North American Class I railroads order locomotives, they order by the hundreds, even thousands, each year. Then add the regionals and shortlines.

Depends on whether another franchise goes belly up, like GNER did. If it did happen again, then the existing franchises might be allowed to run their course, and then revert to public ownership. There would probably be too many legal issues, otherwise.

Prices like that will never attract passengers. Maybe one day another company will start something up, once open access is introduced. I remember reading an article, somewhere, about a company wishing to start up sleeper services from St. Pancras, using double-deck coaches.

I can't really see the UK joining the Schengen Agreement any time soon. The Common Travel Area, with Ireland, would need to be fully disolved first - which may end up happening, anyhow, with passport checks proposed to be introduced between Britain and Ireland by 2009. Many Britons would object...
