Frankly, I don't know why the centre through tracks were lifted. Doing so has reduced the flexibility of the station. That's my 2 cents, anyhow.

Commuter railway systems are beginning to sprout up in the United States, whether it's light or heavy rail. This year, alone, two (maybe more, not sure) new systems have started operations. One in Oceanside, CA, and one in Salt Lake City, UT.

I'd hate to be at the wrong end of that platform, if I were waiting for a train at that station.

This is long overdue. The consumption of alcohol, on commuter services, has no place.

What a fantastic set of photographs!

Part of the reason, also, is that, across the UK and Europe, screw couplings are still dominant. Whereas in North America, buckeye couplings are used. Buckeye couplings are capable of hauling heavier loads, I've been lead to believe.

I will be doing Manchester to Hong Kong, in 2010. But I'll be disqualified, as I'll be catching a few ferries (about four) along the way. As a result, it won't be totally by rail.

I usually only have that happening at 0000 BST. I suspect that a cronjob is backing up logfiles, and so on.

Oh, yeah. It's going to be fun. I've decided to start from Manchester, as I miss the place so much! To be honest, even though I only lived there for four years, I consider it my alternate home.

I'll be travelling for seven months, by train (and about four ferries), from Manchester to Hong Kong.
