If Northern are looking for a spare DMU for next May, they could try asking SWT for one of their 158s. SWT won't admit to having any spare but they do rather like running them over all-electric routes so I'm sure one could be released.

Judging by the numbers of comments about various SWT services out of Waterloo in the late evening, it may be that they are also profitable. Of course, the fewer coaches they have, the more profitable they become.:wink:

Unfortunately this all seems rather waffly. Sounds good though so I suppose that's why they announced it even if we won't see any difference for ages. As for being listed under the heading of 'Rail Improvements' .... I don't think so.

I hope both Platform 5 and 6 have 'Up' and 'Down' escalators else I think Gatwick Express passengers are not going to be too happy.

One improvement that I always thought needed to be done was to install both 'Up' and 'Down' escalators on all the platforms not just some. Previously all platforms had 'Up' escalators but only some had 'Down'. Perhaps this is being been done in the improvements underway, I don't know.

What are they planning to do at Gatwick, given that they have just spent a lot building a new platform. I was not aware that there were any further plans in the offing. I gather that much of the new £50 million is coming from Pension Funds. I hope it is real improvements, not just extra shops...
